    Re: Good Singleplayer PC Games?

I have a very long list of games...

    PC

Knights of the Old Republic I & II: I recomend buying both games as a bundle, aside from the game play (which is exellent) there is a wonderful story that plays out through both games. The Star Wars Universe is wonderful in this game and almost everything is accurate to the movies and (or) the books. The only complaint I have is the some of the strange and sporadic bugs that pop up now and then. (most of which were fixed with updates)

Also, there are some great mods, skins, and items that can be downloaded that add alot to the game play.

    FINAL RATING: 7/10 (great!)

Half-life 1 & 2: whoaaa its like the perfect sci-fi! aliens, guns, girls... yup its got it all... but there are some downsides... The AI for one isan't perfect (in the second game), I would have thought that after so many years of developement they could have done better. Also there is the little matter or STEAM >_<!

Steam is the most horrible thing to ever grace this planet... You have to authenticate your game through the net everytime you play. Bah! I hate it. buuut the games are so great that this can almost be overlooked when you start playing.

    FINAL RATING: 9/10 (wonderful!)

these are my favorite single player PC games but there are many more I'm not giving a good short review for... so I'll list them now :P

    F.E.A.R (FPS)

    Far Cry (FPS)

The Elder scrolls III: Morrorwinds (FPS/RPG)

    Gothic 2 (RPG)

    Unreal Tournament 2004 (FPS)

    Neverwinter Nights (FPS)

    Battlefield 2 (FPS)

Tron 2.0 (yes its actully a good game, FPS)

    Dungeon Seige (RPG)

    Splinter Cell Series (3rd person/stealth/action)

    Mechwarrior Series (FPS/RTS/RPG)

    GUN (3rd person)

Doom 3 (not as good as I had hoped but still a great game, FPS)

Call of Duty I & II (FPS)

    Final Fantasy VII (RPG)

    Homeworld (RTS)

there are alot more I'm not thinking at the moment.

I don't know if it really counts, as it hasn't come out yet and I don't know how it's going to play, but Spore looks like the game. Seriously, by the footage and description of it, it looks like they took everything wonderful about the sim genre, added a kick-ass character/structure manipulation engine, threw in some shiney stuff, and expanded it further than anyone could've imagined a game designer would be bold enough to expand it.

When this thing hit shelves...well I'll probably wait a year or so until the price goes down...then I'll buy it! =D

Still haven't gotten that, care to explain what it's like?

    Re: Good Singleplayer PC Games?

Hmmm, well the only way I can think of explaining it is it's like a MMORPG except it has a plot and there aren't any idiots bugging you on it. It's a first person game, all in real time (no turns), and it’s completely open ended...

I just beat it a few days ago; it took me a little over a week of solid playing to beat it. I'm talking started playing as soon as I got up and stopped only for sleep and I only saw maybe 30% of the game. I started out fighting in the arena as an archer and worked my way up to Grand Champion, once I had finished that I decided to let myself get caught stealing something so I would be sent to jail. I did my time and when I got out a stranger handed me a mysterious note... it was from the Grey Fox, the notorious leader of the thieves’ guild. Following the notes instructions I met up with a guild rep and managed to complete his test of skill thus initiating me fully into the thieves guild, I then worked my way to the top of this guild taking over for the Grey Fox.

Not long after I accidentally murdered someone... well okay so it wasn't an accident but no one saw... well no one except the Dark Brotherhood. This sinister religious assassin cult was quick to contact me and place a test before me, I easily completed this task and was initiated into the Dark Brotherhood which like the others I worked my way up to the top performing my tasks perfectly, I was even converted into a vampire as a reward (optional). Of course I neglected to mention I was also a part of a brotherhood of vampire hunters... the perfect cover my dark nature don't you think? After this I went about with my new found powers completing various quests here and there until finally I decided to get to the main plot...

As you can see there is a lot to do in this game, I barely did any of the quests and yet I found myself the top of the dark brotherhood, the arena, the thieves' guild, a member of the brotherhood of the virtuous blood, the mages guild, the fighters guild, the knights of the thorn (I think that's what they where called...), and the imperial blades. Besides the staggering number of quests there are countless ancient ruins and dungeons to explore and loot, you can enchant your own magic items and even craft your own spells. Class combinations are endless; you could feasibly play this game over and over again and have a different experience with each character.

    Anyway... that's what it's like.

Makes it very open ended, doesn't it?  Would you say that takes something away from the game or merely improves the experience... It's different to say the least having no true one path to follow, but when there are so many as you have so depicted it, doesn't that make it somewhat overwhelming?  So many possibilities, so little time, sort of thing?

    Re: Good Singleplayer PC Games?

I found that true with its predecessor Morrowind but the improvements they have added to Oblivion make it less so, specifically the way your quest log and mini map works. In Morrowind you had to do a lot of searching and leg work to find your quest objectives, now in Oblivion you have quest arrows on your compass that point you towards your current goal (which you can change at any time) as well as towards places of interest (ruins ect...)

Travel time also has a huge impact on the game, the world is only sixteen square miles; now this might not sound like much but it really is rather massive and would take a good long time to traverse on foot... but you don't have to be on foot. You can get a horse, legally or illegally, plus the new Quick Travel option which lets you got to any location you have been before makes life a lot easier unlike in Morrowind where you had to take every step of these painstakingly long journeys yourself. Also there is no time limit on any quests, you will always be able to do it later if you don't want to take care of it right now so you never have to worry about having to little time.

It is certainly open ended but the way it was handled removes any sense of being overwhelmed. It is no longer a massive burger you can't even get your jaws around, it's more like a pizza that you can eat at your leisure: one slice at a time.

    Re: Good Singleplayer PC Games?

Thanks, that makes it much more appealing, covering most of my problems with Morrowind.  Travel was a ***, and sometimes I couldn't even figure out where to go, and as such I was afraid of something similar occurring in Oblivion.  Obviously that issue has been covered to my satisfaction.  I guess I may have to get myself a copy of this game now.
