Re: What are your favourite D&D classes?

It's been ages since I played actual pen and paper D&D, but my favorite Icewind Dale characters are Renda and Ambri Fire-eyes, a ranger and a conjurer, both half elves. I just loaded Ambri up with magic items that give her a decent AC (at least -2).

Also... Some of the classes you're mentioning are confusing the hell out of be, but I suspect that's because I'm still using my dad's 1979 rulebook.

Yes, finally someone that still uses the good ol' rules. I also have that rule book, but I actually bought mine in person in 1980. Kind of dates me I know but things were simpler back then. If you wanted to be some fancy pants dragon slayer or such you just hitch up your boots and went out to slay dragons with the skills you had. None of this specialized training.

For me, the only welcome changes to the old rules would be to be able to play as more races.

It is a matter of oppinion but when 3rd editions D&D was released , for me it was like the second coming. Lo, the Lords of Gaming bring us enlightenment and cleanse us of THAC0! Praise be and pass the d20. Angel [A]

Having played 2E AD&D, I much prefer the new format. Its much simpler and more flexible. And I can finally play a paladin without rerolling dozens of stats.

Re: What are your favourite D&D classes?

I wouldn't know, since I've only ever played by the old rules. I'll have to look through a newer rule book and see. But using the old rules, I'd just like more races to play as.

Re: What are your favourite D&D classes?

Even in 2e AD&D, if the DM allowed a race you could play it. The trick was level caps and multi-classing.

Ah, but our DM was my dad, for whom the book is law, and if it wasn't in the book forget about it.

That would put the boot in any 'house rules' adaption.

Try 3E (well, its 3.5E now) because you have a much greater range of choice. I've played a tiefling with a major fey bloodline (rogue/ranger/assassin) as well as a half green dragon wild elf (ninja/ninja of the crescent moon/ninja spy). Both were fun to play and as the races are balanced to the game level (ie tiefling is a +1 Level Adjustment so your race counts as one level towards your total) having a strange character doesn't unbalance the game.

Re: What are your favourite D&D classes?

Yep. Even in my antique rulebook, you can have fighter/magic users. It was limited to elves and half elves, though I'm sure that's changed.

Re: What are your favourite D&D classes?

3E D&D has pretty nearly free multiclassing. You can play a gnomish paladin/bard/sorcerer if you wanted. You need to be mindful of favoured class and any xp penalty for being wildly out of balance between non-favoured classes but beyond that go mad. Many prestige classes (advanced classes ie assassin or bladesinger) actively encourage mutliclassing. Classes aren't limited by race and there are no level caps.

Where are you, Phoenix of Borg and Muffinlord?

Re: What are your favourite D&D classes?

Me? Newark, California. I don't know about him.

And come to think of it, I don't much like level caps either. I'm glad they got rid of them.

Re: What are your favourite D&D classes?

I have no idea where Newark is Huh? [:^)] Try a net search for local gaming groups. There is also online gaming. I've never tried it but from what I've heard it can be fun. Of course, if you feel like emigrating to Western Australia (climate is much the same as California and we speak English) you could join my gaming group Smile [:)]

Re: What are your favourite D&D classes?

It's in the SF bay area... I play D&D with the people at my school every now and then, but we never get past character creation, and then half of us have to go to class and we never play another session. We have the collective attention span of a ferret on crack.
