So, I'm guessing that this assignment has probably come and gone now, and that unless there's been a flood of responses through private channels, poor Joleen here has done her assignment without the help of this board, ans since she only posted here once, she probably wasn't all that broken up about it, but nonetheless, I think it's an intriguening concept meriting perhaps at least some discussion.

Perhaps her phrasing of the question was wrong, and the overall point of it therefore boring. It's not very interesting to write a paper on why a whole bunch of people personally enjoy anime, but rather, why has anime landed such a following in foreign countries. That would be a more a interesting academic discussion.

Manga an anime are unique in that while some artists may gain individual popularity across the seas, the Japanese commercial art has become popular as an entire medium. It is not the individual stories themselves that are loved, and not just the artwork, but the origin.

An american can create a cartoon with large eyes and a small nose and it will immediately be thought of as manga, rather than an just a comic, and so people are not in love so much with the actual art form, the idea of it's foreign origin?

But why? The reason comes back to content. There is obviously some difference in content between Japanese cartoons, and other american/foreign cartoons.

    What is it?

Re: why anime/ manga so attractive?

this is a short and stupid answer, so sue me...

I don't really believe the japanese have something "more" to it, they just have their own style of cartooning, evolved from their culture, just as american or europese cartoons have, they went deeper into the emotions of the characters, like the europeans went more into conversation that doesnt show emotion but is just meant to entertain or teach the reader, altough japanese comics - wich still is the definition of manga - seem to touch people, that's just because of their use of strong emotion and extremes, i can repeat that same sentence in other ways a million times more, but i won't 'cuz i can see you're getting bored ^^

Yes, the style plays an enormous part in this discussion, but also the fact that the stories are accompanied by drawings (not like the outrageously buffed up superhero comics or the extremely cartoony newspaper comics) witht he fact that the drawings look serious but also non realistic at the same time, giving it a fantasy factor. BAD SIDE OF ANIME/MANGA: For every good anime/manga out there, there are at lest 5000 other ones that are crap, just plain crap. The Internet is overstocked with crappy half-act manga webomics as well as the regular girls-with-Jumbo-boobs falling in unrealistic love with the shy-geek. Just crap!

i think what makes manga?anime so attractive is the artist itself. The artist views his?her opinions frequently. Also,i think what makes it unique is the fact that each artist has his or her own style that u can identify, unlike comics which is an imatation of past hits.In a way reading a manga is much more satisfying.
