    New Avatar System

We exceeded 100 avatars recently, and we've been getting some e-mails from people concerned that they never saw their avatar.  For that reason, we are now only showing 50 avatars at a time for 30 days at a time.

With our current numbers, that means each avatar will be displayed and presumably voted on around 9,000 times in any given month.  After 30 days, the avatar will be disabled to make room for newer submitted avatars.  If for whatever reason we run out of avatars, we'll cycle back through previous submitted articles

We are only accepting 1 submission per comic per 30 days, so the system will reject your submission if you submit more than that.  We do recommend submitting a new character avatar every 30 days, to keep your comic in rotation.

This is the current beta of the program, so if you encounter issues, please let me know. :)

    Re: New Avatar System

    Richard,

I was pleased to see Vito from my comic, Line Item Vito, today as an avatar for the first time!  So, the new system seems to be working.

Only one issue: the name of my comic is "Line Item Vito", but the system is just calling it "Vito."

    Thanks much,
    Eddie

Yeah, when I rewrote the code, I didn't know what that line of code was, so I pulled out the charactername, Jenn pointed out to me today that it is supposed to pull out the comicname field at that particular point, so it should be fixed now. :)

    Re: New Avatar System

Ummmmmmmm... I submitted my character avatar eight days ago.  Why hasn't it been approved yet?

    Re: New Avatar System

Yeah, I've submitted the character avatar for "When Foxes Fly" about a week ago.  It hasn't been approved yet, and I believe the "Character FAQ" says it should be approved in 24 to 72 hours.  Has that changed, or is there some other problem?

    Re: New Avatar System

Sorry about this, when the system says "approved" it is actually live, and the next 50 don't go live until March 23rd I think, which should be both of your avatars.  So sometime around March 23rd, your avatars should both go live and say approved.  When I get a chance, I'll pull the two status's apart, and it will say approved after we've looked at it rather than when it goes live.

    Thanks

    Re: New Avatar System

I hope you mean May 23rd, as opposed to March... That'd be a bit of a wait!

Anyway, hi, I'm new to this forum, I just emailed you an avatar as a reply to an email you sent me explaining the process. I hope that works just as well, otherwise let me know and I'll submit it through the form.

    Re: New Avatar System

You ever type a reply, then close the window instead of hitting submit? :(  I thought I had replied a while ago.

Anyways, Yes, May 23rd. :)  And honestly if you can submit the avatar through the form, it would be better, I'll make certain your avatar is moved to the right date to make sure you are within the next 50 if you can just send me an e-mail letting me know when you have it submitted through the form.

    Thanks!

    Re: New Avatar System

Ok, the SQL 2005 upgrade stopped the process that would have automatically grabbed the next 50, so the vote links weren't working as they couldn't extract any avatars from the DB.  Its been updated, the next 50 were pulled out, and we have 50 for next month too.  The rate we're getting avatars is a bit  fast, so we might have to push it to 60-70 a month so people's avatars aren't sitting in queue for too long.

    Re: New Avatar System

You should have mentioned the exact day when the avatars rotate, unless they're not really set to a specific day a month like the 23rd of each month..

    Re: New Avatar System

    Re: New Avatar System

Hey, thanks for the info.  Yeah, my avatar seems to have gone into cycle right when you said.  Course, now I have another question.  It's been over 30 days since I submitted that avatar (Apr 29), and my submission form is still disabled.  Is there something else I have to wait on before I make another submission?

    Re: New Avatar System

Thanks, my avatar went active right around May 23, (I figured that's what you meant).  My problem now is that I submitted that character on Apr 29, and now that it's over 30 days later, my submission form is still disabled.  Do I have to wait 30 days after I submitted the first avatar, or 30 days after it was approved?
