    RE: Movie Critic Corner

Yeah I agree that the first one was better.

"What was put on film was a piece of art, and then another person says, "Thats not right" and makes his own interpretation?" -tybaltus

Yeah I agree, however the person who said that was Stephen King, the person who wrote the book the movie was based on and if he says that the movie doesn't match what it was supposed to be and he wants to make another one, well thats his right to do so, after all it is his story.

    RE: Movie Critic Corner

True enough, but he should have waited at least 10 years to have a remake.  Critics would be going into the movie thinking exactly what I was thinking.  And people wouldnt want to see basically the same thing while it is still fresh in their memory.

    RE: Movie Critic Corner

Well a couple more random reviews:

    X2: X-Men United (2003) (PG-13)

The rough plot is more mutants learn about their powers, including iceman and pyro who are both youngsters at the university.  The plot centers around the government, however, which was a plotline often used in the X-men comics and the cartoon series.   The film picks up where the last one left off, where Magneto is incarcerated, but eventually his ally Mystique will help him dispose of that.  Throw in the Nightcrawler plot line and also Lady Deathstrike as time goes on.

I came into this film not having high expectations after they blew the first one.  They better damn well have made this one better, or else Id be pissed at the cinematic X-men franchise.

Ah!  It is so refreshing to have a sequel so much better than the first film.  This film makes up for the awful first one.  There are cliffhangers, cool new characters, and a plot line that will never leave you bored.  And I cant have a sentence about X2 and cool characters without mentioning Nightcrawler.  He kicked serious ass, and you always wanted more of his scenes.  He was just that cool.  Pyro was also very well done, and I hope they create the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in the 3rd movie, which is my favorite group of the X-men plotlines (With Avalanche, Pyro, Blob, Sauron, Tempo, Reaper, and Reignfire)

Almost everything was improved from the first film.  Where the first film only had one or two memorable scenes, this one has a handful at least.  You really didnt know exactly where it was going to go.

Now the negatives--as an X-men fan, there were still characters I really miss...Gambit, Cyclops, Shadowcat, etc.  They made very very minor appearances, sometimes as small as just writing acknowledgement, but they werent used.  Hopefully they come in the 3rd movie.  And of course, when you have this blockbuster film with these high profile actors that arent known for their acting, you know the acting will not be great, and that is sometimes the case.  I remember being sort of frustrated with Iceman specifically, but well, you didnt see this movie for the acting, Id bet.

This film is a vast improvement, and Im now excited about this movie franchise.  Gimmie More!

    Clue (1985) (PG)

This movie based itself on the boardgame.  The rough plot is a bunch of characters, the ones you know from the classic board game, are invited to this mansion in the middle of Maine.  Each one has some sort of connection with the government and is being blackmailed by a character named Mr. Body.  In the house is Mr. Body, the Butler, the maid ( ), and the cook, along with the guests--everyone from Colonel Mustard to Mrs White and Professor Plum...etc.  However they are given weapons by Mr. Body so they can kill the witnesses of their crimes and the informants of the blackmail.  However Mr. Body is the one that gets killed, much to his dismay.  And chaos insues after nobody knows who killed Mr Body.

Wow!  This film is awesome.  Lets start with the acting.  There are great comic actors in this film.  Tim Curry, Martin Mull, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, and Michael McKeon are among the cast--these people are fantastically funny in this film.  There are great one-liners and hilarious slapstick scenes at times.   Paranoia is everywhere in the house and you know that can only lead to comedy when done well

The plot is great because its a comedy about....well dying people   The game is alive in this film and if you played the game, you really like to follow the parellels, and even if you'd never played you wouldnt notice, nor would you care, because it is all fluid and not dependent on the game.

Also, there are multiple endings, and each one makes sense, and of course this is another parellel to the game because sometimes there are endings that WOULD make sense eventhough they are wrong.  Follow the plot as you will, it is enjoyable in every way.

This film is the film I have seen the most.  Ive seen it over 20 times and I am still not bored of it.  I could watch it another 20 times.   The best film I have seen.

Don't forget George Carlin is in the film too. His part however is very small and he doesn't do much.

    RE: Movie Critic Corner

    A 5 movie review!

Planet of the Apes (1968) (G)

The original Planet of the Apes is classic story where astronauts are lost and arrive on a strange planet inhabited by intellectual apes.  Humans are viewed as beastly and are the slaves of the word to the superior apes, which is the classic tables-are-turned theory.

Its been a little while since Ive seen the movie, but it worked all right.  This was the birth of what would be a pretty good series of sci-fi movies.

This movie is considered a classic and for good reason.  If you dont know what happens in this movie, I suggest you not reading my reviews of the later movies for this series, because it will give away the storyline which is fascinating.  And if you havent seen it and dont know what happens, it can be quite shocking when it all boils down to it all.

The movie really didnt have a whole lot more going for it other than the revolutionary idea it conveyed and the good plot.  Acting was adequate and special effects were that of the 1960s.  Still they should never have touched this film.

    4 out of 5

Beneath Planet of the Apes (1970) (G)

The rough plot is another astronaut goes searching for the missing astronauts and is shocked to find the Planet of the Apes.  He also discovers a race of humans that recovered from nuclear war.  These humans however adore the atomic bomb that almost destroyed them.  Once more it is potentially active.

Hrm...this was pretty obviously a sequel trying to capitalize on the popularity of the first movie.  However it aint all that bad.  It progresses through the storyline, and while this film lacked memorable scenes or good acting there were still some very good moments in this movie, and the plot was given a boost.

This movie certainly could have been better, and had you gone into this film expecting the same stuff from the first movie, youll be hurt pretty bad.  Still I really liked the scenery in this movie, which was an improvement from the first, especially the New York Subway line...that was very cool.

Escape from Planet of the Apes (1971) (G)

The plot continues through, and this is the centerpiece of the plot where the puzzle pieces start to come into place on how Earth could have turned into what it did in the first 2 films.  Before the nuclear blast in the 2nd movie occured, 2 apes escaped, and they would land on Earth a few years after the other astronauts left.  Of course it is a male and a female ape, one that is much more intelligent than their old-Earth counterparts.

Wow, the plot again is the center of this film, and you start to understand why all this happens.  This film is far better than the rather lightweight Beneath Planet of the Apes. The charcters in this film are really interesting in this film, possibly the best they had ever been.  You really feel like youre cheering for the apes for the first time, because now theyre the minority.  Its all the government vs these 2 escaped apes.

Though this film appears to have the least amount of action or amount of shock the other 4 have, this is the most compelling of them.  I felt this movie is possibly the most enjoyable to watch over and over again.  Hopefully the 2nd film didnt turn you away from the series.

    5 out of 5

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) (G)

The plot is now apes are being treated as slaves as populations for other creatures falter.  However there is now an intelligent ape that escaped the clutches of the government in the previous movie.  He is being helped by Ricardo Montelban, playing a circus keeper who has raised the ape (he made appearances in the previous film).  However, the circus keeper's death by way of the government enrages the intelligent ape and he gets a revolution against the humans.

This film isnt all that bad.  Its a bit of a jump from the previous movie, but its still pretty good.  If you follow along the plot alright youre now not quite sure who to cheer for.  You want to cheer for the apes, but then again, no you dont.  At least thats how I felt.  Again, its just progressing this massive plot that actually explains the weird and shocking plot line.

Acting again isnt superior, but its pretty good.  The characters again are not bad.  Not as good as the previous movie though.  If youve followed through the Planet of the Apes franchise so far, this film will fit in nicely in your memory.

    4 out of 5

Battle for Planet of the Apes (1973) (G)

The rough plot is the Earth is now being run by the Apes after the successful rebellion in the previous film.  Humans now work for the apes in this harmony.  However there are still mutants living the earth under destroyed cities after the nuclear attacks.

Augh!  They came so close to having all movies in a large series in adequate position!  But no, the 5th film flops out big time.  This was the most cardboard piece of crap in the series.  What a shame!

Still it continues to explain the plot line and finishes it up, completing the full circle in the series, making it all make sense.  So if youve watched the first 4 films, while this one will leave you with a bad taste in your mouth, at least the story will be complete.

But really, if youve enjoyed the previous 4 films, please brace yourself for this film.  It was a lot of nonsense with only 1 good scene towards the end.  In fact only 2 scenes are worth remembering.

    RE: Movie Critic Corner

I hope people read my posts in this thread, I put a lot of effort into posts here, only 2nd to the ones I put into the Auto Racing thread.  Some of these posts take upwards to an hour/ hour and a half to write

    Howard the Duck (1986) (PG)

Deemed one of the biggest flops in history (right with Waterworld, The Postman, Battlefield Earth, Shanghai Surprise, Heaven's Gate, and The Adventures of Pluto Nash), the plot centers on this duck that is flung from his home on Duck Planet into Cleveland, where he is discovered by a rock singer which he befriends and eventually wants to experience a romance with (yep, thats right).  Also scientists want to bring him home but the government wants him.

Oooooh-kay....Well this is a film that tries to be blatently funny but I found my face almost as active as a stone during the film.  The first half isnt THAT bad, aslong as you play along with the plot and dont point out the completely outrageous, as if this wasnt outrageous enough.

This film has Jeffrey Jones in it, and it isnt Ferris Beuler's Day Off, so therefor it MUST be a B-Movie.  Well if you take it as a B-Movie, well power to you, but it really wasnt meant to be that way.  If you do take it that way, then it may be more enjoyable, but I really founding lacking in the laughs, unlike GOOD B-Movies like the aforementioned Mom and Dad Save the World.  That movie was a cornballish laugh fest.  This film is just badly done.

As far as the comedy of this film, I think I set a record for most roll-eyes moments in the film.  The jokes are just so bad....pun bad.  You better brace yourself for as many bloody duck-jokes as possible.  It comes swinging RIGHT away at the very beginning with duck puns.

Like I said, the first half of the film isnt all that bad, and if youve survived through the romance between a duck and human then you certainly are ready to dive into the second half of the film which is far worse.  It has to do with the government wanting Howard and then also an evil demon that inhabits Jeffrey Jones' character (dont worry, its somewhat explained on the way through the movie)

Any film that has 8 different people playing the main character (Howard) is bound to failure, and this is rightly a failure.

This isnt the worst movie Ive seen though.  There have been FAR FAR worse.

    Office Space (1999) (R)

The rough plot is a worker finds his life is much like a drone, doing the same rut day in and day out, but after going to a psychiatrist, he finds himself changing, not caring and doing what he wants, which is nothing.  Ah!  Music to my ears.

OK, I really was expecting a bad film here.  I remember hearing the director of the film made some really distasteful stuff earlier in his career, and this film is aimed at an audience that may or may not include myself.  But, damn, this film was hilarious and well played.  The jokes can be rude and/or crude at times, but they are all done well.

There are several scenes and characters that will stick out in your memory in a good way.  From the execs at the office, to the main character and his friends, to an overexcited waiter, to a man obsessed with his stapler, it is all good and all funny.   I especially like the cast, who played their characters to a tee.  In fact Stephen Root's character was so hilarious he's had websites dedicated to his character, AND he will be making a similar role in the new movie Dodgeball --and he wasnt even a main character in Office Space!

If you hate work, or even if you dont, this film can be enjoyable on many levels.  Break down the walls of the cubicle and stretch, cause youve got Office Space

Don't worry tyb, we read them.

I liked waterworld and the postman... I have a thing for post apocalyptic settings like fallout and Road Warrior so that might make me biased.

Heh Office Space is like one of my favorite movies, I did my Web Design final by making a fan site for that movie. It was a really sweet site with lots of sound clips and bios as well as eppisodes of the cartoon that the movie was based on, Milton. Yes it was about Stephen Root's character Milton, the bumbling floor mat of an office worker. It also had a link to where you could get your very own red swingline stapler.

    Good good.

I actually watched the first 20 minutes of Waterworld, and I didnt stop because it was bad, I stopped because I had to run some errands.  It wasnt atrocious.  But I cant base a 3 hour movie on 20 minutes.  But from what I understand the film is considered a bomb because it cost SO much and took in only a fraction.   I think in order for it not to be considered a bomb, it needed to rake in just about what Titanic did.  Besides, it had all kinds of bad press and Kevin Costner, so its sort of expected

I had the misfortune of watching Battle for the Planet of the Apes. Boy, it was crap.
    Scratchit: But he's a cripple!
Blackadder: He's not a cripple, Mrs Scratchit. Occasionally saying "Phew! My leg hurts!" when he remembers to wouldn't fool Baldrick!
