Dune. Possibily with God emperor as my favorite.

And of course the prequels, the prequels are great.

****, best book I've ever read? damn.. that's a really hard choice, and I tend to go with the most recent really good one. But go with the Xanth series for fantasy. For Sci-fi? ... The Ship Who Sang

    umm.. normal fiction, DEFINATELY Shogun.

The best sci-fi I ever read is the one that got me into the genre in the first place, Neuromancer.

    RE: Best book ever?

    Hmmm...Tough choice.

That said, I think that, at least until someone else can convince me otherwise, A Farce to Be Reckoned With has to be up near the top of the list...if for no other reason than that it's the last book Zelazny got to contribute everything he intended to...

Others on the short list: just about anything by Neil Gaiman (though it seems like American Gods may be his best at this point), The Long, Dark Tea-time of the Soul by Douglas Adams (like everyone else, I wish he were still with us, but to write more Dirk Gently, more than continuing Hitchhiker's), the Islander series by S.M. Stirling (which I count more as one book than three) and just about any of Harry Turtledove's non-Detina or Derlavian War books...(Harry Turtledove does magic...ummm...not so much?)  Honestly, there's just too much in the genre to make one choice...I haven't even touched on Saberhagen or Piers Anthony (and I can't believe none of y'all called me on that goof while it was up!!) yet...

I'd have to say I liked I, Jedi by Michael A. Stackpole. He's a great author, not just Star Wars books too. I good combination of characters, plot, excitment, humor, and everything you could want.
I have to put this in again???

    RE: Best book ever?

Seventh Son/Ender's Game all the way. although, actually, Stranger in a Strange Land also is the best... as is the Ringworld series... and Lucifer's Hammer... And, if it qualifies, Dante's Inferno would probably be some of the best FANTASY i've ever read... that and the Wheel of Time series. and dune. Sadly, i can't think of anything else, so... i'm done now.

    Discworld, esp. Witches Abroad.
Lord of the Rings, though that hardly needs saying.
Prelude to Dune, House Corrino I loved. Didn't like Dune itself as much, though.
Hitchhiker's GTTG 1-4 (I could not follow Mostly Harmless)

I absolutely adore The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

It's just the perfect combination of sci-fi, philosophy and humor. Lots and lots of humor.
