    What is the incentive

Ok, so you work each day of week to climb up the ladder of TWC. Then at the end of the month it resets. At buzz if you make it you get a nice little graphic next to your title. Why should you work to get to the top at TWC? It's sort of like working all week for your paycheck, your boss congratulates you, then he takes your paycheck away. The extra visitors from being at the top is definitely nice, but shouldn't yo get something more?

I agree, I also think EVERYONE should get banner for their comic, not just the top 10. Help out the under dog, you know?

Ah, so that's what is happening. My comic is new to this listing and last week I had gotten to around #850, then checked it out today to find I was plunged back down to #1688. So, its a monthly rating system. :\

    Re: What is the incentive

The problem with everyone getting a banner is that a lot of people would stop going to TWC if they knew it would take forever for it to load.  Me and Jason (artist from dndorks.com) are working on a full profile page for each comic, where the banner "would" show up.

As for getting to the top, I would think the traffic is nice, but I'll consider some sort of flag in the DB that triggers when the comic is in rank 10, it will probably have to wait for our impending upgrade to SQL 2005 because I think it would be too much of a performance hit with how the DB is setup right now.  Once we have that trigger, we can do special things based on people's rank.

    Re: What is the incentive

Without resetting (or some such technique) then comics that collected lots of votes/hits from long ago would dominate the top of the list and newer comics would have an unfair disadvantage.  This way, once a month everybody starts out equal again and each month they get an opportunity to compete from the same starting point.

But maybe instead of resetting to zero, it would be better to use a 30-day, 60-day, or 90-day rolling average, recomputed once a day.  There are other algorithms that could be used that give more weight to newer votes and less to older votes.

    Re: What is the incentive

So do the incentives actually help me climb to the top of the lists? I have no real clue what to do here. On the Webcomic Lists site I am ranked anywhere from 10-28 and here I am 1476 and I have had 9 hits and I am sure I may be responsible for some of those. Should I do incentives? I am so new to all of this so if I sound like an idiot, please forgive me

    That is very cool.
