    Navigation problems

Hey, can anyone help me with a slight problem?  I want to get rid of all my archived htmls and just have the comics appear (like magic) in the designated place when the previous or next buttons are pressed.  Follow me?  I think it's a java thing, but I'm completely un-java.  ooh, and a way to link from my archives page to the main page displaying the appropriate comic, all without inidvidual pages for each strip.  any help would be great!

    Re: Navigation problems

You can only do what you want by using some kind of programming: PHP, Javascript, etc.  If you're non-technical I wouldn't recommend doing it,

For the non-technical, you might want to hook up with a comic-hosting service that gives it all to you in ready-to-use form, and all you have to do is upload your images.  See Smack Jeeves, Transplant Comics, Keenspot, Drunk Duck, etc.

If you don't want to go that route, you might try Walrus . This is software that you install.  I know there are a number of cartoonists who use it.  But the installation and configuration will be a little bit more involved.  Whether it is more technical than you want is something you'll have to decide for yourself.

But my "professional computer-guy consultant" question is this: why do you want to change?  Is there really anything wrong with what you're doing now, or are you changing because you think you "should"?

Pros of what you are doing now:  It works; You understand it; If something you do to a new page breaks then the rest of your comics are still intact; It doesn't cost any extra money to learn / adopt something new.

Pros of changing: If you make a change you like to one page then all the other pages are automagically changed too;  Advertising and announcements on every page are up-to-date (This can be a detriment if your announcements only make sense in the context of the comic that is on that one page); Less disk space -- some, but not much because most of the disk space is consumed by the images and not by the HTML; It's more with-it and groovy.

Me, I programmed my own site because I'm a programmer and it didn't occur to me that I might use somebody else's software until it was too late.  My site is now driven by PHP, Javascript, MySQL, and lots of tinkering.

    What was your question again?
