    Hotel California

    [Intro]
Route 66, a place long known for being one of the biggest stretches of road without any sort of civilization.  Still, there are places, each standing as an oasis from the barren road.  An escape from the tumbleweeds, dust, and asphalt of the highway.  You are one of a few travelers who came across this place, in one fashion or another.  Perhaps your car broke down, or you just happened to need a place to stop, or perhaps you need a place that's as much an escape from society as it is an oasis of it.  Whatever your reasons, you're here.

You find this one to be well off in particular.  3 floors high with a restaurant.  A gas station with a large garage, big enough to service semis and cars alike.  The architecture is simple but uniform.  Dust colored bricks make up the surface of it, only a little darker then the sand of the desert.  All the roofs are flat concrete, the one for the hotel having massive AC units barely popping into view.  The sign up front stands tall on its thick pole, 'Hotel California' spelled out in 70s style neon lights, making you wonder if the place is just as old and simply well preserved for the last 3 decades.  For all it's normal appearance, though, you can't help but feel that there's something forboding about the structure.  Like there's more to it then seems on the surface.

    [Welcome!]
By gods, another RP by Qesun.  First off, remember this rule:

    1) Every major action is an attempt.  If you're trying to hack something, doing something that requires work or concentration, or fighting something, it's an attempt.  Even telling NPCs to do something is an attempt.  I even have a habit of making dodges an attempts.

If that's cool, then we'll continue.  First off, to sign up, you need to make a fresh character.  A human one.  Try to be realistic, too.  At the same time, I'm actually not asking for anything big and fancy.  I'm here to present you all another great RP, not make you all create massive characters.

Here's what I ask for in your profile:

When you post your character there, don't forget your intro.  If you post your character in the character thread, be sure to let me know in your intro post.

That done...  Welcome to Hotel California.  Please enjoy your stay.

    Re: Hotel California

(This profile is also in the charater profiles post. It's the pink one)

    Name: Ewan Cooke
    Age: 23
    Gender: Male
    Appearance:
    Height: 6' 2"
    Weight:  150 lbs
    Build:  Light, lean
    Eyes: Blue
    Hair: Red
Clothing: Simple American Apparel shirts make up most of Ewan's wardrobe, quite a few woot.com shirts in the mix, mostly with humorous or geeky artwork. He wears mostly blue, boot cut jeans in various shades, some style-faded, others solid color. On cold days or nights he frequently wears an underarmor long-sleeve under a t-shirt; he doesn't get cold easily, preferring low 60s as a comfortable temperature. He also has a gray Quicksilver brand sweatshirt and a green Columbia Sportswear waterproof shell. High-top Chuck-Taylors, bright green is his typical footwear; sturdy gray running shoes for anything athletic, or when he feels like it.
Other: He's nearly always wearing a simple pair of sunglasses outside if the sun is up, whether or not there's clouds. Pierced left ear with captive-ball ring.

    Career: Freelance Web-Developer
    RP Stats:
    Agility - 11
    Charisma - 12
    Constitution - 7
    Dexterity - 10
    Intelligence - 12
    Strength - 8

    Skills:
Computer Use: Ewan can sit down at a computer and use it, period. If it's an OS he's not familiar with it'll take him a couple minutes to familiarize himself with it then he's off to the races. He can also debug a lot of average problems with systems he's not familiar with given some time to familiarize himself with the system, more efficiently if someone is there to tell him things like when the problem occurs and what was going on when it first started. He loves the Windows operating system and can diagnose almost any issue if he can see it (he's horrible at tele-support) and in most cases he can fix it.

Networking: Ewan also knows his way around networking intimately. He made sure to study it intensely in college because his own networks would constantly give him grief, he was prepared to stop that annoyance at all costs. The result was his skill in working with networks. He can network basically anything, cross-OS, old to new versions, you name it and he'll do it; he'll have most of his hair at the end of the process too.

Hacking: Ewan has a side hobby of web-based hacking. He's never done or tried to do anything malicious, but he's successfully gained access to quite a few website restricted areas before exiting with a grin and filing away the procedure in his head. He keeps up to date on a few notable hacking blogs, mostly to make sure the sites he builds are secure.

Climbing: Rock climbing, and climbing in general, has been a passion of Ewan's since he was in middle school, getting in trouble many a time for climbing school buildings. He's become an above-average climber and he climbs regularly. Ewan knows all of the proper techniques (and some of the improper ones that work just as well) and has developed good climbing muscles, while his total strength is nothing special, his long history of climbing has given him excellent power-endurance and good power while climbing. He'll climb anything from a rock, to a building, to railings, to basically anything he can get his hands and feet onto.

Possessions: (Locations represent typical location of item, posts may move items around a bit)
Car - Reliable, blue 80's Toyota sedan
    Car Trunk:
Duffle Bag - Seven days worth of clothing changes following clothing description above not including the clothes he's wearing; bath towel;  bathroom bag with toothbrush, toothpaste, anti-perspirent, razor, shaving cream, shampoo, fingernail-clippers, tweezers, and soap; $100 cash (five $1s, one $5, three $10s, and three $20s) in a small pocket in the bottom left corner of the main pouch, buried in clothes, for emergencies.

Medium sized hiking backpack - Black Diamond climbing harness, La Sportiva climbing shoes, pink chalk bag with full chalk ball, extra chalk, several crabiners connected to harness with: ATC belay device, several daisy chains, full set of stoppers, 2 cams (one small-medium, one medium), two extra carabiners; 70m orange, dry-rope clipped to outside of bag on large carabiner in rope-bag; helmet: Two flat-handhold, pink, pom-poms shoved through opposing vents (looks like pigtails coming out of helmet, the handholds lay flat inside helmet so it can be worn comfortably) and "Fabulous" written in sticky rindstones on forehead of helmet (a gift from a friend).

Two black garbage bags, one with two blankets, the other with a thick sleeping bag

    Two person Coleman tent

Camp Stove and bag of various cooking gear

Compact car-jack and lug wrench, two quarts 10w-40 oil, large bottle brake fluid, concentrated anti-freeze and half-gallon of water, socket set

    Car Back Seat:
    Small backpack - Laptop computer, modern HP computer, "Upgraded from Vista to XP Pro" as Ewan puts it, normal amenities including internal wireless card, extended life-battery and extra normal-life battery; USB travel mouse; AC wall plug for computer and cell phone; several legal size yellow-paper pads; a few pens, several #2 wooden pencils, a pencil sharpener, an eraser, a calculator, 6-inch ruler;

Food - Lots of this, an egg crate behind the pushed forward passenger seat and an egg crate on top of that carried everything from utensils and cups/bowels to bread, peanut butter, and jam to canned food of many varieties. Suffice to say he's stocked. He's also got a couple of gallon jugs of water sitting beside the egg crate on the floor, just in case he stops somewhere with no water...or gross water.

Jacket and sweatshirt (same articles as in clothing description)

    Other:
Cell Phone - Camera flip-phone, AT&T service, fully-charged at the moment, lasts three to four days with normal use without needing a charge.

Hard-plastic water bottle - Nalgene, generic, whatever, it's a water bottle with a screwcap and a loop to facilitate hooking it to his climbing harness

SPF 45 sunscreen in ziploc baggie

    US Atlas

Brief History: Ewan's basically a normal, just-out-of-college guy. He doesn't have any extreme story about the hardships he's gone through. He's been through the hardships any boy growing up typically goes through. His parents are still happily married, his brother is in his senior year of high school, not doing as well as Ewan in the academic areas, but greatly over-shadowing Ewan in the arts, which is what his brother is striving for anyway. He mostly put himself through college, graduating with a BS in Computer Science, 3.8 GPA from the University of Washington, though he lives in Oregon. He married 4 months ago to his wife Sarah, who also graduated from UW. She is now a math teacher at Astoria High School. As for Ewan, he works from home as a successful freelance web developer, doing some freelance programming on the side, but his passion is website development. He knows his way around web programming languages very well, it's been a hobby longer than rock climbing for him, and he can't get enough of it. He's so successful due to the help of a buddy of his in college setting up some contacts in his freshman year, then building on those to his current, regular client base. He makes a good living which, combined with his wife's, is more than enough to pay for the mortgage on their small home, the bills, the food, and give them a little spending or saving money. Which is just fine with him.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Being that it's the beginning of June, schools have closed down for the summer, and Sarah had found herself with 3 months of free time for the first time since she was in high-school. Sarah and a friend went to Europe for two weeks, something she'd always wanted to do, but Ewan and Sarah really couldn't afford for both of them to go. Ewan let Sarah go, wanting her to do something fun that she'd always wanted to do, he really didn't have a huge desire to see Europe, and there would always be another time when their savings account was a bit more robust. Consequently, Ewan was stuck with the prospect of having a dreary, empty house for two weeks. The night before she left, Sarah suggested a road trip, something that Ewan had always wanted to do as well, and which would be considerably cheaper than him going to Europe with her, since he'd be camping most of the time, with a couple hotel stops here and there. His car got very good gas mileage, and food wouldn't be too bad for a week or two of puttering around the country. So he waited a day after Sarah left and headed south, thinking that as good a direction to start in as any.

Ewan loaded up the car and left, casually making his way down through Oregon, then California. He hopped on Route 66 just a day ago, day 4 of his trip, and he was cruising along now, dusk setting on, with his arm left arm resting above the fully open window. The radio was playing some station he'd scanned with some music he wasn't really paying attention to. He was hoping Sarah was ok. Since she was out of the country they'd agreed no phone-calls, international phone bills not being a favorite things to see on their account. He was a little anxious, but he managed to shove it aside, he knew she'd be ok. He continued driving before letting out a yawn. He knew for a fact that there'd be no camp-sites for quite awhile, though, he thought, he didn't know if there were any hotels closeby either.

As if on command, the Eagles begin playing on the station he'd chosen and the hotel appeared just ahead.

"Ok, that's enough radio for me I think." He says as he presses the on/off knob and closes the distance between the Hotel California and himself, "I hate it when things like that happen. At least I'm pretty sure I'm not dead, or doped up." He pulls into a parking spot and turns the car off, reaching around and locking all the doors before grabbing his laptop backpack and slinging it over a shoulder. He walks inside and looks for the reception counter, feeling his back-pocket and the wallet inside it just to make sure it hadn't fallen out in the car. Once the counter is located he'll go and ask for an economy room for the night, paying with his Visa, and he'll ask whether or not the hotel is equipped with wireless internet.

Career:  New Lawyer, Lily aspired to be a lawyer since middle school and worked hard to work her way through college and Law school.  Her goal was to get into a firm as early as possible.  She met her goal easily because of her personality and intelligence; she knew what friends to make and when to make them, what internships were important and which were inconsequential.  She is now starting her career at a prestegious firm in Arizona.

Investigation: As a lawyer, Lily has had to learn how to look at something, and duduce what it could possibly mean or be significant for.
Self-defense:  Lily enjoys working out by running and martial arts.  She practices Do Shin Khan, Tai Kwan Do and Judo.  She has descent proficiency in them, but doesn't feel the need to continue in them to become a black belt, she wants enough to defend herself, nothing more.  She doesn't like the idea of being vulnerable as a woman, and feels it very important to be prepared due to the horrors she sees on a regular basis.

    Possessions:

Food:  Lily keeps snacks and drinks for when they go on vacation.  She has rice cakes, and other dry foods that don't need refrigeration.  Also, Lily has a waterbottle she always keeps filled for her self and a bowl to fill when they stop for Whiskey.

Brief History:  Lily has just graduated from law school and has joined the firm in Arizona.  Lily doesn't know how long she will stay there but she is happy with it for now.  Her life growing up was a typical childhood as the youngest daughter.  Her parents were very protective but also wanted her to go out into the world unafraid and willing to work to whatever it was she wanted to do.  As of now, Whiskey is her only loved one and friend at home, she hopes to someday be married and find that guy that doesn't mind loving a workaholic...and he has to love dogs.

Lily is driving on route 66 because she heard the drive was great!   In addition, she needed a vacation from work and life in general.  She brought no business attire and has no laptop with her.  She has her cell phone that she will use in emergencies and her mp3 player for her walks with Whiskey.  She needs a place to stay for the night because she is sleepy.  a couple miles down the road she comes across Hotel California and decides to check in.
