    Upcomming Star Wars movies

I know what you're thinking: "Upcomming Star Wars movies?  Blasphemer! There are no new movies, only crap!"  Yeah, well, i figured after the flop of Ep. I and Ep. II that the development of Ep. III might be in question.  And beyond that, perhaps Lucas' daughter would not even bother developing Episodes VII through IX.  Just throwing that out there to accumulate thoughts and information.

Since when are there episodes VII-IX?

If I recall correctly, the reason it's broken into several parts was that it was gianourmous after Lucas wrote it. He had to cut it into two parts. But the two were still too big, so he broke both of those into three parts.

I remember someone (Timothy Zahn?) writing the sequels and later on, sometime after during the production of the prequels George Lucas gave the rights to filming the sequels to his daughter.  I could be wrong.  Which is exactly why this thread exists.

Why is it one year they bring out Ep.I, then a year later they bring out Ep.II, and yet theres been no Ep.III yet?

Because it's entirely possible they decided not to do Ep. III and cut their losses.

I know they started filming on III... and Ep. I and Ep. II were three years apart (1999 and 2002), so I really shouldn't be looking for Ep. III until spring 2005.  Still, I'd like to know.

I've been following ep. III very closely... it's looking very promising so far... hopfully it will make up for how bad the other two prequels were...

and the sequels are just a rumor... (for now)

    RE: Upcomming Star Wars movies

    Episode 1 and 2 weren't that bad!

It's like the final fantasy movie, If you sit back and watch them from a neutral standpoint they're damned good movies. People build up these monumental expectations that even they admit that it can't possibly live up to, and then bash the hell out of it because it isn't perfect.

There are a lot of terrible movies out there, for every genre. If you set Episode 1 and Episode 2 next to all of the sci-fi movies of the last 3 1/2 years, it will stand with the highest quality. It has a functional storyline, clear beggining and end, isn't riddled with plotholes, has awesome special effects, and cool battle scenes.

People expected a glorious movie, and they got a good movie. That is bad, but mild bad. There is no reason to go around speaking of it in hushed whispers and adding as many derogatory adjectives as you can fit before the title.

JarJar Binks, for another thing, (while I'm in rant mode) is not so terrible. Yes, he has an annoying voice, and serves as the requisite comic relief, but he deserves maybe a 10th of the animosity people direct at him. If that.

Yes, Young Anakin talks, looks, and acts like a ten year old boy, (and has cheesy lines) but that's done on purpose, sorry to disapoint those whom expected him to be some lanky withdrawn badass.

Yes, the movie whores out it's special effects. That's not a bad thing. I can allow movies to be arrogant and flaunty with special effects when they reek of quality and production values. It's a good thing.

And yes, the plot is predictable, though that might have something to do with the fact that this is a prequel, and almost all of the major twists are known to fans. It's kind of hard to throw curveballs when you have to stick to the preset information lest the fanboys start a riot.

I tend to agree with most of Woodtopian's points, although I would class Episode 1 as a "mediocre" rather than a "good" movie. On the other hand, Episode 2 was a pleasant surprise; no work of genius, but great fun, and a good story spoiled only by the awfully conducted token love affair. Oh, and very, very pretty special effects

Considering the vast profits taken by the two Star Wars prequels, I see no reason from a commericial point of view for Lucas to give up on them, especially since he still has his "vision" laid out ahead of him.

    RE: Upcomming Star Wars movies

I have been a long time star wars fan.  I hope that Lucas will continue with star wars, with such titles as the truce at Bakura which actually happened after the return of the Jedi end, or the Cortship of Princess Leia, or maby further into the many books that continued this tale.  There is so much more that is to star wars than what the movies have shown.  It would be a waste.

What you have to realize is that the books are not official. If he does continue it, it may differ greatly from the books.

I think he should make the prequels take place after the books.. make them about Luke's son..

The new films are good films but they don't have that Star Wars feel to them. I doubt it is possible to get that back. I don't think of them as Star Wars in my heart, just as another Sci-Fi.

    RE: Upcomming Star Wars movies

You've summoned me out.  All shall despair my knowledge.

Okay the tentative date for EP III is spring 2005.  No doubt in May around the 16-19, if you follow George's pattern.

Dude in the middle of the book coverpage is General Grevious, I think.  There's been a bunch of buzz about Grevious.

There is a rumor that Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) has a contract extension and blurted something out about sequels.  Of course, he could be just messing with all of us Warhead nerds' heads.  Many of the companies that have done production and post-production work that aren't apart of Lucasfilms have had contract extensions past 2010.  Which would be enough time to get one sequel out using Lucas's current timetable, it'd also leave time for DVD and video and still have some negoiatation time left.

My guess is that George will either invalidate the Expanded Universe (the canon and chronology of the book) and make his own movies in that period.  Or he'll go thirty to forty years after the original triology which is still untouched.  The furtherest the books go is twenty-five to thirty years after EP IV.  The latest series ended there, and Lucas books has shifted all new fiction to the clone wars era.  They may be trying to leave George an opening.
