Well I was bored, and I didnt see any Movie discussion thread other
than the Oscar thread, which only applied to the Oscars, really...so
here is a place where you can post your
reviews/questions/comments/responses on any movie you see or have seen
or are looking forward to seeing, etc.
My first review is the first of what is a classic series of movies:
The Pink Panther (1964)
![]()
The rough plot for the film is there has been a great jewel called
the Pink Panther stolen, and the theif is unknown. The characters
are basically introduced, and an inept detective, Jaques Clouseau
(Peter Sellers) is assigned to the case, where comedic scenes would
soon follow, thriving in Clouseau's ineptness.
Now, this was a situation where I had already seen the 2nd movie of
the series before seing this one, the original. I wont review the
2nd one quite yet, but this one didnt quite reach the excellence future
Pink Panther movies would get to. It started off quite
slow, and it was hard to really dive into the movie. It wasnt the
obvious fun comedy I was quite expecting.
But this all changed when Jaques Clouseau really started to become a
character to the movie. He supplied very amusing scenes,
especially the bedroom scene when there were two other men in the room
who had become....acquanted with his wife. The scene was an
absolute classic.
One of the last scenes, the costume party scene was also quite funny.
The ending didnt quite do it for me like it did for the 2nd movie,
and later the 3rd for this series (I still have yet to see the 4th and
5th editions to the series).
The movie was clearly stolen by Sellers' acting and great slapstick
comedy that would be the main focus in future movies in the
series. These scenes may not be high tech that have the special
effects of the modern day movie, but the movie doesnt need
it. It feels like one of the innocent enjoyable cartoons we
all watched when we were little, only in real
physical characters. All of it is done tastefully and
well.
Despite the troubles of this movie, it was quite an enjoyment to watch, if for just Clouseau's scenes.
I give it a 4 out of 5.
--------------------------
Next up, I movie I just recently saw:
Toys (1992)
![]()
The rough plot is the owner, Kenneth Zevo, is in charge of a
large toy business, but Kenneth Zevo dies at the beginning, and puts
the company in the hands of his brother, also a war general released
from war (Michael Gambon), instead of giving it to his unstable son
(Robin Williams), who seems to take nothing seriously. The
general, however shares no interest in toys until he realizes they
could act as great weapons of war. Leslie Zevo (Williams) and his
close friends feel that this is not the right direction to go, and
oppose the general's plans.
This movie proves to be very little besides eye-candy. They
went well over the top on many of the pieces of scenery. The plot
felt quite empty and at times either rediculous or
unfollowable.
Williams' character is a typical Robin Williams character, and he
was fun to watch. LL Cool J plays the General's son, and does an
adequate job, and the general was a decent villian, but nothing really
stood out. Much of the acting was only paper thin.
The climax was probably one of the least enjoyable moments in the
movie, and yet this is when the movie should be the best. I just
must say it just didnt do it for me.
The movie has all the looks of a cult film. There were several
scenes that COULD have been so much better, but they just missed it.
The best scene was easily when Williams' character gave a speech to
the good non-war toys, which consisted of everything from penguins, to
aliens, to dolls being bitten by porcelain dogs. There was all
kinds of clever writing and puns in the speech...if only this kind of
stuff was all over the movie.
I was disappointed, and I must give it a 2 out of 5. The friendly toys won me over, and prevented this from getting a 1.

More to come. And feel free to join in

Oh, theyre definetly tame. I hope the kids could enjoy it. Its a kind of film that you could enjoy for all ages. But as I will get to in the future, Pink Panther 2: A Shot in the Dark I recommend over the original Pink Panther. The entire series was recently released on DVD, and for reasonable price too! ![Wink]() Well it doesnt have to be the film you most recently saw...For my next review I will do a film I have most recently seen to be disclosed later ![Wink]() As for movies to look forward to, I only really see Troy in the near future. Im not so high on all of these sequels to come out soon. Maybe Spiderman 2, which has Dr Octopus, who rocks. For the less commercial movies out there, I have heard great things about Spartan, Supersize Me, and Touching the Void.

Well Ill be sure to review the first one, even if it was a little less than 6 months since Ive seen it. ---------------- Ok...now I will review the movie I have most recently seen: Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) (PG-13)
The rough plot is that Clowns have landed from outer space (as mentioned), and have plans to kill all the humans on Earth. The only thing is that they use typical clown tricks to kill people--for example--they use a puppet show to attract people, only one of the puppets weilds a vaporizor gun. Another clown uses shadow puppets to attract another audience, and then one of the shadows eats a bunch of humans. And then theres popcorn that turns to life, and spring loaded boxing gloves that can decapitate people...you get the point. And they capture the people an put them in cacoons of cotten candy. The main characters are the two local policemen, a couple that witnessed the clowns' landing, and two college pranksters, who are friends with the guy who witnessed the landing. Now, I had no idea what to expect from this movie...mainly something really cheesy...and well, yeah, its cheesy, but thats what its supposed to be. This movie is meant to spoof alien thrillers, and they just go all out to parody everything about aliens and clowns. Its whacky. The plot...well...gee...I dunno whether you can call it that. Its so stupid its funny. While I wasnt laughing out loud, I was at least amused. The acting lags at times...but that was certainly expected. There is not really much gore, but there are a couple scenes that can get a bit grotesque, especially the the jail-cell scene, so its probably not for the children. Im not going to recommend buying this movie or going out of your way to see it, but if you happen to catch it on cable and have an hour and a half to kill, this movie will do the trick. I give it a 3 out of 5. ------------------------------------ Next up: Ice Age (2002) (PG)
The rough plot is an anti-social mammoth meets up with an erratic prehistoric sloth as the entire world is in peril because of the upcoming ice age. These two creatures are the classic odd couple that needs to work together...or rather the sloth pleads with mammoth to help him out because of his ineptitude. Eventually they meet up with an abandoned cave child, who a sabretooth clan wants to capture, and one of the sabretooths joins with the group, acting like he wants to help them to their destination, while he really just wants to lead them into the hands of the sabretooth clan. I had high hopes and low hopes at the same time for this film. I was expecting it to either be a great movie that is just fun, or a movie tagging along with the computer animation craze and act like just another copycat film. I must say, I am relieved. The voices chosen really fit this movie, it is hard to see characters through the animated shield, but this movie does it just as well as Pixar would. I was not expecting a whole lot of character development, but all the characters except for the prehistoric squirrel with awful....terrible luck, who is just absolutely hilarious in his scenes. The group really has its comedic and touching scenes together. It will sway on emotions while also having a good time. There were a couple disappointing scenes, but they had enough substance to still be enjoyable. Not quite as impressive as many of the Pixar movies, but just as enjoyable. I give it a 4 out of 5

Oooh! I think I'll have to watch Ice Age when I get back home from university, sounds pretty good.

Welcome back Bubba Ice Age is definetly worth watching. I hope you all like it as much as I did Most people Ive talked to have also liked it, though there were a couple that thought it was a little too mushy or thick in some parts.

Im going to go into the Blockbuster comic movies of recent memory... X-men (2000) (PG-13)
The rough plot is Wolverine and Rogue find eachother in the wilderness and are attacked by Magneto. Cyclops, Professor X, and Jean Grey interfere with Magneto's attack, and now they must foil Magneto's surely evil plans...etc.etc. Well, Ive been an X-men fan for nearly my entire life, so I was pretty excited about this film, and I had high expectations, even if it was a clearly commercialized film directed at the public, rather than looking for art in the movie. This movie was more than a disappointment, it was just plain awful. I was expecting to be entertained for the full run time, and it could only amuse me in a few scenes. If there was a film that was the perfect example of a mainstream-hype film, this would be it. The acting was flat, and the characters had zero development, outside Wolverine and Rogue. That said, I thought this was supposed to be X-men, as in plural...not just Wolverine. Yes, those claws are cool, but geez...does he have to be the center of every scene? When I was a kid, I got tired of him pretty quick, but fortunetly the cartoons were able to balance the characters in their air-time, so I really didnt mind Wolverine. In this movie he is being featured ad-nausium. I must say Toad is the only bright spot of this meaningless film. He was rather amusing, problem was he was killed off... I give it a 1 out of 5. ----------------------------------- Spiderman (2002) (PG-13)
The rough plot is a boy gets bitten by a spider that went through a scientific experiement, and slowly he discovers the strange powers he has at his fingertips...literally. There are plot twists between girlfriends, friends, job oppurtunities, and fathers, leading up to the Hobgoblin, the villain of the film. I didnt know what to expect for this film. It was obviously directed at the audience, and I was still feeling numb from the X-men debaucle. But this film also had done well in theatres and critics didnt beat it up, so hrm...I was intrigued. Now Im not sure whether this was authentic with the Spiderman comic book. Im relatively sure that the Hobgoblin storyline was different from the comic book and cartoon series. There was far more talking than I had expected, but that makes sense for a series-starter. It sort of DOES need a plot. But some of the conversation scenes were just uninteresting. Some on the other hand fit in alright. The Hobgoblin was a well done villian, he is disliked, and you want him to get his ass beaten. The ending is sort of a puzzle, and youre not sure whether to really be happy or unhappy with it. All and all, it was a definite mainstream movie, however they did things RIGHT in this movie, for the most part. I give it a 3 out of 5

THe last movie I saw. Hey I don't get to pick them much anymore.
Well I though that this would be one of those really cheesy big family movies. But I was peasantly surprised. It was a movie about a big family but it still retained a good vibe through out. It is about a couple Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt (she is very hot) who meet in college and both want a big family. Steve plays a football coach and Bonnie plays a sports column writer. Once their family gets going they quite there jobs and move out into the country to buy a big house and raise their family. Steve Martin is funny as usual and Bonnie does a great job playing a loving mom whose family is the most important. Hilary Duff plays one of the children. Now I have not seen much of this young lady but she is not a very good actor. The main thrust of the movie is when Steve and Bonnie decide to move back to a big city, Chicago, and have another go at their dream jobs. Steve is a big time coach at a local university and Bonnie writes and publishes a book. Needless to say this puts abig strain on the family and hilarious hijinx ensues. In the end the family values win out over the careers and they are all happy again. I would give this movie a 3.5 out of 5 as it is a nice story and has good values. You can watch this one with your whole family.

The last movie I saw was: Kill Bill Volume 2
This is a very good end to the two part movie. After the first Volume, the Bride (played brilliantly by Uma Thurman) is still out for revenge after having disposed of two of the five people on her death list. Just to explain to those who haven't seen Volume 1. The Bride was at her wedding and very pregnant when Bill and the four members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad showed up to kill her. They killed everyone at the wedding before Bill put a bullet through the Bride's head. However the Bride survived and when she pulled out of the coma she was ready for revenge. She has since cut her way through the first two people on her Death list (leaving lots of dead on her way). But now she's onto the next 3; Bud (Michael Madson), Ellie Driver (Daryl Hansen) and Bill (David Carradine).
The second volume doesn't focus on the big battles as the first volume did but much more on the personal stories and why Bill wanted to kill the Bride. Still some great scenes in this movie with Pai Mei (Gordon Liu) completely stealing a scene from the fabulous Thurman. Less gory than the first movie (though there is one scene which had a big yuck factor) it still has a superb ending to the movie as the Bride discovers someone worth more than her revenge. I can't wait until this is released on DVD so I can watch both Volumes together.

Im glad youre all jumping into the reviewing @jwm- @Hillary Duff Yeah, I havent seen her in much, in fact only from commercials, but she seems like the example of the bubblegum actress Im not much a fan of Martin. I dont know, Ive never found him terribly funny. Thats probably one reason why I have never gone out of my way to see that movie. But, if its a solid movie, Ill keep that in mind. @Vkm- yeah, Ive definetly heard similar stuff from professional critics. Theyve been saying that this could be an Oscar winning film. Theyve also said that you could watch Vol 2 without ever seeing Vol 1. Do you agree? Ive never seen Vol 1, but Tarantino is a brilliant screen writer, and it doesnt surprise me that he can make a masterpiece. Ill have a couple other reviews in the near future

Lets do the Fun and the Fantastic for this post A Shot in the Dark (1964) (PG)
The rough plot is Inspector Clouseau is back, and is investigating a murder that has occured at a rich household--much to the dismay of the commissioner, who is well aware of his ineptitude. The inspector befriends the woman who appears to be the obvious culperit, when she holds the smoking gun in a locked room with the murder victim. This film is absolutely flawless and is side-splittingly funny. If you found Clouseau hilarious in the Pink Panther, you have seen nothing yet. This film takes him to a new level, and there are countless scenes that had me laughing hard enough that I couldnt breathe. This film was an absolute delight and increadibly innocent. This is just a perfect example of comedy done right. I could have watched another hour and a half of this stuff. The flaws of the first Pink Panther movie were completely done away with. There was no slow start or boring characters. Clouseau is hilarious, as is the inspector. I couldnt get enough of this film, and I think anyone who sees it will agree 100% with me. Clearly, I give this film a 5 out of 5. Shrek (2001) (PG)
The rough plot is Shrek, an anti-social ogre has his swamp invaded by the soon-to-be-king and his fairy tale creatures that he wanted captured. Shrek meets up with a talking donkey, and the donkey never leaves Shrek alone. Shrek goes to the king so that he could remove all the creatures that invaded his home. The king would do so as long as Shrek rescues a princess in a dragon-guarded tower so that he could wed. This film was flawless for well beyond half the movie. I cant really discuss the flaws because I do not want to spoil the end for those who havent seen it. There were a couple plot flaws and perhaps logic circles that could be drawn. That said, they werent severe. The film got right to the point, and it never dragged on at any point. It was a treat for an hour and half. The film was witty and played on all kinds of fairy tale steriotypes. It was ironic, funny, and well done in good taste. Of course, I had high expectations going into the film, everyone I know was talking about it, and the film didnt let me down. It is a must see movie. Im not so sure what to think about the 2nd one coming out next week. This one was wrapped up nicely, though a little corny. But Im not going to attack it. It will be interesting to see what they do for the 2nd film in the series. Even though this film had its flaws, by far, it made up for it. I was ready to have my finger on the "4 out of 5" trigger, but this film deserves better. It JUST squeeks into the 5 out of 5 catagory. Very good indeed.
