People beleive in things like scientology for the same reason they beleive in christianity- They just need something to beleive in. Unfortunately, There are assholes who take advantage of people who are only seeking something to beleive in, a place to belong. As for why they continue to beleive, this is due to something called the belief perseverence phenomenon. When it comes down to "I'll just keep beleiving, no matter what they say." and "They're right, this is stupid, and I'm stupid for beleiving in it.", the first one is very appealing (They aren't aware of this, btw. It's all happening in the subconsious mind.).
