    Re: Auto Racing (revived)

    British Touring Car Championship
    Brands Hatch
    Race 1

The words out of my lips just before the start of the race were, "watch for those BMWs make a great start" no sooner had the words passed the lips I regretted saying them. Colin Turkington made bad start. Jason Plato shot by the BMW on the inside into Paddock Hill Bend to take the lead with Turkington slotting in behind. Fabrizio Giovanardi got a decent start passing Darren Turner with Mat Jackson making the best start passing Chilton, Turner and Giovanardi into the first corner. It almost proved his undoing as Turner hit Giovanardi and sent the Vauxhall sliding sideways across the track narrowly missing Jackson's BMW. Giovanardi collected the car but had lost a lot of positions. This let Tom Onslow-Cole get through into 4th place with Turner continuing in 5th ahead of Tom Chilton in 6th. In the pack Gareth Howell had nearly stalled on the grid and his slow start caused some congestion with Erkut Kizilirmak tagging Fiona Leggate. Leggate was spun around into the pitwall and out of the race. Going into Druids, things got worse for the Kartworld team as Jason Hughes was then pitched off the race track and into the gravel. Into Graham Hill Bend, Tom Chilton hit Darren Turner who was sent sideways. Chilton got by but his exit speed had been compromised and roaring through came Tom Onslow-Cole, picking up two positions. The Safety Car was then deployed to pick up the Kartworld MGs littering the circuit.

With those cars safely away, the racing resumed with Jason Plato continuing in a nice lead over Colin Turkington. Tom Chilton got sideways going through Graham Hill Bend and this let Matt Neal by for 5th spot at Surtees. Mike Jordan then dived up the inside of Chilton at Clearways to relegate the Vauxhall another place. Indeed Jordan seemed quite happy to let Neal do the hard work as then Neal passed Onslow-Cole for fourth spot, Jordan also followed him through. Darren Turner had likely taken some damage from his earlier contact and was beginning to struggle, losing 8th place to Gordon Shedden. The Scot had to have been treating this weekend as an extended test session as he had barely 10 laps of testing during the pre-season. Turner's suspension would fail a few laps before the end of the race. Mat Jackson running in 3rd place was able to comfortably stay ahead of Matt Neal but couldn't catch Colin Turkington. However a small mistake by Jackson led to him breaking his oil sump on a kerb. Oil did start to leak out from the back of his car though it wasn't effecting the BMW's performance. The race stewards however decided to bring Jackson in to get the problem fixed and showed him the black and orange flag. It was very unfortunate for Jackson but he didn't come in. He claimed after the race he didn't see the flag and that his radio hadn't been working, whatever his reason it led to his disqualification from a fine 3rd place. Jason Plato took victory with Turkington in second. Neal was third and clearly thrilled. Other good performances came from Adam Jones in a good 7th place, already bettering his achievements in the Lexus last year and Chris Stockton and Martyn Bell, both of whom showing improved pace. The A-Tech Alfa Romeos had plenty of reliability troubles with Marsh forced into retiring and Pinkney ending up 2 laps down. Also a congratulations to Rick Kerry for completing the race in his diesel BMW 1-series, a fine achievement for his very hard working, small team.

    Re: Auto Racing (revived)

Hey only a month late! Big Smile. I'll do one race a day from now on.

    Brands Hatch
    Race 2

Jason Plato made a better get away than Colin Turkington and led into Paddock Hill Bend. Tom Onslow-Cole made a good start and got up to 4th from the line. However while the BMWs make excellent starts their tyres seem to be prone to taking their time to heat up. This meant that Tom Chilton was able to slide by Onslow-Cole into Druids . Behind them Gareth Howell ended up being beached in the gravel trap. Fabrizio Giovanardi made his way by Adam Jones on the second lap at Paddock Hill Bend. Giovanardi then tapped Gordon Shedden off into a spin into the infield of the circuit at Surtess through to the exit of Clearways. The trip across the infield of the track clearly damaged the Civic and put the Scot out of the race.

There was a battle developing for 3rd place with Matt Neal trying to hold off Tom Chilton, Tom Onslow-Cole and Mike Jordan. Chilton managed to get by Neal and Onslow-Cole then tried to do the same. The rookie hit Neal and sent the reigning championship into Chilton with the result of Onslow-Cole gaining both places, behind them Mike Jordan went off and dropped back and Darren Turner made his way passed Neal. Adam Jones and Fabrizio Giovanardi had continued their battle with Jones having re-passed the Italian and now took advantage of Neal recovering to pass him as well. Chilton closed back in on Onslow-Cole and passed the BMW by diving up the inside into Clearways. Turner now hunted down Onslow-Cole and tried to pass him at Paddock Hill Bend but the two made contact sending Onslow-Cole on a bumpy ride across the gravel trap.

Jason Plato went onto win ahead of Turkington both being very evenly matched and only separated by their start. Chilton took 3rd place ahead of Turner. Neal eventually took 5th place back from Adam Jones who nonetheless got a very good 6th place. Mat Jackson flew through the field in his BMW to grab 8th spot (one wonders what he would have done had he started higher up), while Matt Allison and Chris Stockton scored their first BTCC race points in 9th and 10th places.

    Re: Auto Racing (revived)

    Brands Hatch
    Race 3

Introduced new for the season was a brand new random way of picking how many positions would be reversed for the race three grid. Instead of the cards they had in 2006 they have gone for the BTCC Race 3 Pole Position Wheel of Fortune! Jason Plato as race 2 winner spun the wheel of fortune and got Fabrizio Giovanardi on pole. The pole didn't actually help the Italian a whole lot as he fluffed the start. By him went Matt Neal who made a great getaway and Adam Jones in his SEAT. Turkington made his best start of the weekend and also got by Giovanardi for third place. Midway through lap one, John George spun off by himself. This brought the safety car out.

The work crews however managed to bump start George's car and it got going again. The safety car went back in after a single lap much to the surprise of most of the field. Matt Neal had been paying attention though and got a good restart, second place Adam Jones though had been caught out and immediately a gap of two seconds opened up between Neal and Jones. Darren Turner attempted to Tom Chilton, the Vauxhall went off and lost a few places to Turner, Mat Jackson and Jason Plato at Clearways.

Giovanardi had recovered from his woeful start and began to harass the back of Turkington's BMW. The Vauxhall managed to get alongside Turkington out of Graham Hill Bend and went through up the inside of Surtees to get third. Turkington was then under pressure from Darren Turner. The SEAT had less success ballast and wasted no time in looking for a way to get by. However Turner was far too ambitious in his move to get by Turkington. Braking too late into Clearways, he nerfed Turkingtonhard from behind sending the BMW into the gravel where it promptly beached itself. With Turkington's car in a dangerous position the safety car was once again deployed.

On this restart Adam Jones was far more alert and was right on Neal's tail as they crossed the line. Jones looked for a way to pass the Civic but Neal used his experience to keep the door firmly shut on Jones. Too firmly shut as it turned out as Jones lost some momentum in trying to pass Neal he slipped back into the clutches of Giovanardi who dived up the inside of Jones at Paddock Hill Bend to take second place. Neal much preferred having Jones behind him to Giovanardi.

Little mistakes began to slip into Jones' driving and coming out of Clearways one lap the Toledo ran wide, in an instant Turner and Jackson were upon him slipping up the inside into Paddock Hill Bend with Jason Plato following through into the Druids hairpin. Jones would be kicking himself for making such a small yet costly error. Mat Jackson though was having another excellent and had Darren Turner's SEAT in his sights. Jackson had been targetting the second works SEAT drive for this season himself but after it became clear that Darren Turner would get the nod Jackson had been forced to go the privateer route with his family run team. It must have been great for him to see he was faster than the SEAT. Hanging onto the back of Turner, Jackson managed to slip up the inside of the SEAT at Brabham and use the BMW power to out drag him down the pit straight, taking third place into Paddock Hill Bend.

In the race lead, Matt Neal could just about hold his own against Giovanardi who simply couldn't quite get close enough to find a way by. So Matt Neal took a surprising victory for a car that no one had expected to being winning so quickly. Giovanardi got second ahead of Mat Jackson who was happy not to be disqualified this time. However someone was disqualified from this race; Darren Turner. While had had crossed the line in 4th place his move on Turkington was judged to be bad enough to warrant being disqualified. So team mate Jason Plato was promoted to 4th ahead of an impressive Adam Jones. Tom Onslow-Cole was 6th having taken the spot from Tom Chilton at Clearways right at the end of the race. Mike Jordan recovered well from his retirement in race 2 to get 8th place ahead of the two Motorbase SEATs of Gareth Howell and Matt Allison.
