    John Peel

Bad news, guys. Legendary Radio DJ John Peel died of a heart attack today. As one of the only mainstream DJs who ever played new and inventive music, he will be a great loss. He was also one of my personal heroes. Read about it here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/3955289.stm
And, also, play Teenage Kicks by The Undertone in tribute, as it was one of his favourite songs. Thanks.

It's a shame, I really liked John Peel, he rocked.
What's the point of a hero with no one to save?

    Le sigh

He had a beard, he rocked out

What!? Did you guys ever even listen to his show? Okay, so he was cool and had a beard and played lots of obscure stuff, but most of it was ****.

Here's a crazy idea, why don't you simply not care about what other people listen to?

But yeah, I can't say that I'm a fan, what with me not being able to listen to British radio, but that sucks nonetheless.

    RE: John Peel

You could've listened through the Radio One website.
    If you'd so desired.

    RE: John Peel

But the whole point of John Peel wasn't that he played just good music; It was that he played stuff that was new and interesting. Stuff that there is a very good chance you won't have heard before or, indeed, ever again. Besides that, there was plenty of bands he gave a leg up on their way to stardom. Finally, he was pretty much the only widely known DJ who was clealy doing what he did for the shear passion of listening to music. He listened to pretty much every single demo tape he got sent.

Aside from all that, he was an immensley nice guy. I was a devoted listener of Home Truthes, too, and it shows through how nice he is to everyone. The world would be a better place if only everyone was a bit more like John Peel.

    RE: John Peel

True, without obscure music we'd all be listening to the music you all listen to.

    RE: John Peel

See, your problem is your music facism. It is kinda charming and endearing, but it does make you sound like an ****hole. I, for one, listen to music that I enjoy, and anyone who tells me to listen to stuff I don't like can go to hell. However, my music tastes have broadened since I came to Uni; I generally just like listening to new stuff, which was why I enjoyed John Peel's show.

    RE: John Peel

Yes yes, I'm a music fascist and a music whore (two contradictory terms if ever I heard them), but I never tell people what to listen to. When I tell people that their music is ****, I'm simply stating my honest opinion. And I agree, having people tell me what I should listen to is annoying, hence my hatred of everything popular.

John Peel did play loads of obscure and interesting stuff, but I sometimes wonder if he actually listened to what he put on - anyone can walk into a record store and pick out a bunch of stuff they've never heard of before, but it doesn't make you a great radiocaster.

    RE: John Peel

Oh, he listened to it. That's what I admired so much about the man; Most of the stuff he got he didn't put on the radio. He would spend all day listening to stuff he got sent. Plus, his music show was only facet of his career. He was a constantly charming and entertaining man. Everything he was ever on, he made me laugh. Plus, he was the eternal pessimist: if you go though life expecting the worst, you're never disappointed when it happens.
