    Re: My favorite free mmorpgs

Planetscape isn't free...($10 a month) and ROSE used to be pay, but then hackers fucked it up. Then it made the US a seperate server and that'll be pay again someday.

Agh, so many generic korean grindfests...

    http://english.flyff.com/
Flyff has been the only one to hold me for a little while. The TOS says it won't be pay to play but rather incorperate a payshop. It's cute cartoony style and music really grip your senses, but the mindless grinding with unentertaining or even unrewarding quests just made me stop. Being able to fly around is cool (but it takes a while 'till you can do that) and the combat system is pretty solid (merging some WoW and Lineage2 aspects), but overall, it becomes very boring with the limited creature setup of "Kill this one then move onto the next type that happens to be rated 1 level above it." and spells really sucking in the beginning of your starting classes. (and the chat interface is rather bothersome)

I used to play Maplestory because I thought it was my dream to finally have a sidescrolling MMORPG, but then as I played further into it, it became more and more annoying to grind through the same creature over and over (but still had a better setup than flyff). I've heard past level 30 or 40 the game lets up again and you get to really have some fun, but I was level 25 (and only making half a level progress per day of 4 hours of gameplay)...and man it sucked enough (party quests are 100% BULLSHIT). So many neat ideas, but just not executed as hoped.

Runescape is nice in theory...but doesn't quite execute it that well, and finding the good in the community can be rather difficult. I enjoyed it's ideas of leveling up your abilities by using it, but seeing everybody just stick everything into the same str stat or def stat (if you were a wizard) made it rather pointless and limited...not to mention how large the hacking community is (but they're actually pretty cool).
    ...wee?

The 4th Coming is a free and frequently updated MMORPG that has held my interest for years.

    Re: My favorite free mmorpgs

I wanna design a game... Something like this (I copied this from another post on another forum, forgive me if it doesn't make sense in some respects, or is overly long. (Me likes to ramble.)

Here is the MMORPG that i am gonna make when im rich...

    1) NO CLASSES: choose from skills and stats that are open to all, no unique racial crap etc....

    2) Wayyyyyy more skills and stats to choose from, allowing for more diverse characters(superhero, tech armor guy, engineer, hand to hand combat guy etc)

3)No lvl cap... Seriously, u pass ur toon from father to child when u die, especially if it was....

4)Modular and easily moddable... Release the damn editing tools to the public and they will create endless content, for FREE (like quakers already do), Modular for easy updating and adding new content etc (so u can upgrade the asstastic graphics as time goes by)

5)Multiple perspectives...This is the tricky part, I doubt u can get FPS and isometric views working together worth a crap, but 3rd and 1st person should be ok... which brings up...

6)Make the gameplay a blast... So it will keep me entertained... U know its called grinding right? That doesnt sound like a fun word at all.. Grinding. Think Deus Ex

7)Homeland defense... Shouldnt you be protecting your town? Dude you should be fighting for freedom or something... Towns and areas that you can take and harvest for resources, etc..... and defend with the....

8)Kick ass party system! Make it worthwhile to be together, thats half the fun of these games, social interaction

9)Quests... Make them feel more like quests. Please. God. I feel like I'm going to the store with a really long list, except you have to get all the stuff from different stores, and it has to be organic.... Why not let me unload some whupass on a dragon instead? I dont wanna fetch a damn thing TYVM. Quests should feel epic, not something the village idiot could do instead.

10)Embedded advertising... You heard me. When you eat a power up, its a Hershey bar, potions will be coke, mountain dew etc. It might seem lame, but your using pots and meds anyway and the games gotta get paid for which brings us to...

11)Free! Its all free, paid for by Rice-A-Roni or whatever. The disk will be like AOL, or u D/L over the net, but consumers equate value w/object. And its the disk that gets them.. FREE FREE etc so u put em at every checkout

    12) Time travel.... OK heres where the story comes in.. Youre a secret agent (1 of many) for NSA or whatever and scientists discover criminals going back in time etc (think Timecop) and send agents to stop them uncovering a much larger catastrophic something or other blah blah blah. The point is, YOU are from the near future, going back in time (anytime) to different eras in history . Thin, I know but WTH... The idea is to get kevlar aginst armor etc ....

13)Specific items. Remeber the 'No classes' thing? Plate armor works against swords but not so well against bullets.... Magic spells will annihilate kevlar. So the items you use and the stats they require will dictate your class. So u could wear kevlar and use magic and fight people w/firearms... Since u have kevlar vs their bullets and they have kevlar vs your magic, they are screwed. (Think rock, paper, scissors) So u would be a mage w/kevlar armor....Or u could be pure agility (dodge) advanced weaponry operator (laser guns etc). u get the idea. Cross/multi classing is a woefully underdeveloped concept in most mmorpgs.

    14) No walking all over the damn place, take a freakin cab, teleport whatever

15)Spawn monsters for the lvl and number of ppl in the area

16)Full on PvP, with a tacking system.... Kill noobs for a hobby and ppl will get pissed and KoS u. The game polices itself and wars can break out at a moments notice

17)Boot into the game... For stability and security issues, and to shoulder some of the decentralized server support base (leaf-to-hub)Also the game could determine optimal setup for the power of your PC(scalable)

18)Multiple characters... Let me play with a whole party. Neverwinter did this pretty well

19)Wearables... Undershirt, shirt, padding, armor, chainmail, 18,677 amulets, bracelets, rings etc.... IRL I can wear anything I can get to stick to my body and the game should do the same. So you would be on an eternal shopping spree, trying to score ever better swag to pile on and eventually be as powerful as possible.

    20) Make all this work on consoles, PCs, WebTV etc.... Wide acceptance is the only way to sell a lot of games. Next Gen consoles are generally full featured, and mouse/keyboard add-ons are fairly cheap

See, nothing here super innovative, but if combined with decent production values and strong design skill (Warren Spector) u would have a timeless game. The thing I hate most is the time I have wasted on mmorpgs that I will never get back. Most of my old toons have been deleted by now. Ack! That avatar used to be part of me, I'm not ready to see him die a pixelated death from neglect. But with no lvl cap and some of the other features I have mentioned here, you could play forever and, hopefully never lose interest.
