    Games you should play

This is a list of games that everyone should play, most of them are older, and/or did not catch the praise and popularity they deserved. If you haven't played these titles, go out and grab them before they can't be found at all!

    SNES-

Earthbound: Earthbound, or Mother 2, is a quirky sprite RPG which has developed into somewhat of a cult classic. The graphics are notably mediocre, but the heart is pure gold. Very hippie.

Rock N' Roll racing: This arcade style game is somewhat of a Super Mario Kart with missiles, aliens, car upgrades, and terrible quality rock music.

Zombies ate my neighbors: Pure, fun. Go around dodging chainsaw murderers and beat the zombies off of tourists and cheerleaders with a squirt gun! Watch out for the Giant baby!

Uncharted Waters 2: This game surprised the hell out of me with an understandable interface, fair translation, and tons of depth, very rare for a SNES strategy game. Buy a ship and make trading routes, beat off pirates, or become one yourself ans you slowly build a fleet. Set in the early days of exploration.

    Playstation-

Lunar, Silver Star Story complete: This is the purest example of classic rpg action, complete with so many packaged goodies that it isn't funny. A bound instruction manual, cloth map, soundtrack, and more. The game's somewhat aging graphics are helped along by over an hour of full motion animated cutscenes. Game has quality voice acting.

Star Ocean, the second story: The best game on the playstation. This massive game has a fantastic battle system. The plot branches so many times, in such major ways, that repeated playthroughs are a must if you want the full story. I've played through it 4 times and am still discovering new quests, characters, and plotlines.

The legacy of Kain, Soul Reaver: Great mood, and lots of cool puzzles.

Final Fantasy Tactics: I cannot praise this game enough. Go buy it.

Final Fantasy 8: The best final fantasy, in my honest opinion. A very cinematic and complete experience.

Breath of Fire 3: The playstation has lots of great classic RPGs, lots and lots and lots. Don't pass this one up, though, because it is something special.

    Nintendo 64-

Pilotwings: I used to love this game, and if you can find it for under 10$, probably at game crazy or gamestop, then snatch it up. The flying physics are great. Very calming game.

Conker's bad fur day: Funny adult humor, and not that bad of a game either.

Ogre Battle 64: If you're one of those diehard nintendo fans, and refuse to indulge in other systems, you'll likely be lacking in RPGs and strategy games. This is not one to be missed. In fact, it might be worth buying an N64 by it's lonely.

Mischief Makers!: If you've been following along, you'll notice that I have a thing for quirky games. This is a perfect example. This game is awesome, and very unique. Side scrolling action at it's best.

Poke'mon puzzle league: I'm afraid to play this game, for fear that I might not be able to stop...

Jet Force Gemini: Best 3d bug themed shooter ever. Pure action and great control.

    PS2-

Romace of the three kingdoms 8: Excellent strategy game, very refined, for those that don't mind SNES quality graphics and sound.

Disgaea: This is the best example of it's genre next to Final Fantasy Tactics. Extremely likable and generous with genuine laughs.

Hitman 2: This is the best 3d stealth game ever. Seriously. This rocks.

Harvest moon, Save the homeland: Ok, yes, it is a farming simulator. It's also engaging, likable, and fun.

    PC-

Icewind dale/Icewind dale 2/ Baldur's gate/ Baldur's gate 2: Black Isle has done excellent work with Dungeons & Dragons, and these are the pinnacle of that. These are golden.

Sid Meier's Civilization 3: This is the closest you can come to the experience of taking over the world, by force or persuasion. Daunting in theory, brilliant in execution.

The elder scrolls 3, Morrowind: This game is massive beyond description. Completely non-linear, with a simply mind boggling amount of freedom, and endless things to do. This game has the largest and most active modding community I have ever seen or heard tell of. This is the best PC game ever in my opinion, though it's certainly not for everyone, and even at two years old the specs are daunting enouh to break lower end computers.

    RE: Games you should play

    Heathen. You left out:

    SONY PLAYSTATION

-Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen - The first and most important in the entire series, for it gives the story.

    SONY PLAYSTATION 2

-Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 - The sequel to Soul Reaver. Not as good as the first Soul Reaver, but plenty of puzzles and very story-based.

-Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2 - The story of the Hylden and Kain's rise to power.

-Legacy of Kain: Defiance - By far the greatest game in the entire series. 5 bosses, 8 mid-bosses, puzzle-solving galore, and tons of god-awesome combat as both Kain and Raziel.

    RE: Games you should play

(shrug) I didn't want to overflow the list with any one series, you start them off with Soul reaver, (since Blood Omen is neigh impossible to find) and if they like it, they'll grab BO2 and SR2 (which are still easy to find).

    And yet more...

    Playstation 2-

Armored Core 3/silent line: Build a giant mecha... nuff' said.

Summoner: I dislike the interface, but the game itself is a sound, gritty action RPG with some innovative ideas.

Robotech, Battlecry: One of the better run and gun action games out there. This offers a lot of gameplay, and a good atmosphere. Fans of Robotech should delight in it.

    PC-

Fallout/Fallout 2,the Post nuclear apocalypse RPG: More good stuff from Black Isle...

Deus Ex: I have problems with the interface, but it's a great game nevertheless.

Command and Conquer Red Alert 2: This is one of the better RTSs on the PC, and offers great multiplayer.

    RE: Games you should play

Best to start off with Blood Omen, if they can find it. Try Ebay, Amazon, etc. Blood Omen is the first. There's a lot of stuff that won't make sense until you play it.

    RE: Games you should play

Gotta throw in some old school Mario (super mario bros. 3), Final Fantasy III(also known as VI), Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart 64(buggy=FUN in this case), Legend of Zelda (the first is an all time classic).   BTW, I liked Neverwinter Nights better than Morrowind, to each his own i suppose.

P.S. I'd throw FFVII in the mix there, but I know there is alot of dissention on that one.

    RE: Games you should play

I'm mainly focusing on games that weren't hugely popular or well known.

Also, the list is very heavily biased, and just because I thought it was a great game, that doesn't mean you'll love it. I know that not everyone enjoys games about hangliding, or farming simulators, but there is a much higher chance of such on these boards, and most of these games are cheap enough that you can pick up a handful for the price of any new $50 game.

    RE: Games you should play

Not well known?  Your list reads like my top 50 games of all time list.  Maybe I just like the off-the-beaten-path kinda games.

    *applauds*

Congratulations, Matt. Now you just need to get a PS2 or, cheaper, PSX, and play it.

    RE: Games you should play

you completely missed SEGA genisis and Dreamcast...

    for the Genisis:

Star Control-Awesome strategy game, it's like pre-Masters of Orion. 3D interface starchart screws with your head, tho.

Outlander-the only difference between the SNES and Genisis versions of this game is that in the Genisis version, you've got the First person view, and in SNES, it's third person.

Dune: The Battle for Arrakis-Best. Strategy. Game. Ever.

gotta go for now, will update on the DC and PC stuff later.

    *Homeworld!!!!*

    RE: Games you should play

Not hugely popular or well-known? Then why do you have two Final Fantasies in there?

    RE: Games you should play

Because Final Fantasy eight and Tactics are generally overlooked in the grand scheme of FF games, and IMHO they're the best examples of the series.

Sorry about overlooking the Sega consoles...

I agree about tactics, but not VIII. What was so good about it?

    RE: Games you should play

Great cinematic presentation, innovative (If slightly broken) combat and character development system, distinctive (if annoying) characters, and an original (for a final fantasy game) premise and execution.

    RE: Games you should play

Granted, I loved the FMVs and the fact that every background in the game was an FMV.

But I didn't like the characters, particularly Squall.
