    Re: BS's football ramblings.

I got the feeling it was a little biased. Officials calls were almost always against the Seahawks, and I felt their officiating did favor the Steelers on a few calls, some very rubbish calls (like the first PIT TD and the late game holding call)

But I thought Seattle did many things to lose the game, rather than Pittsburgh winning it. Bad coaching, bad dropped balls, bad missed field goals, bad penalties, and bad clock management all culminated in a poor loss. Pittsburgh really only had 4 or 5 good offensive plays but thats all they needed to win as Seattle just handed the trophy over to them giftwrapped

    Re: BS's football ramblings.

Well what a season. The Seahawks and the Steelers in the SB was more than I could have asked for at the start of the season. While I am happy for the Steelers to have win #5, but it should not have been. The first Seahawks TD to D Jack was a TD, not a interference call. The Big Ben rushing TD was not a TD, he did not cross the goal line.  I guess it is a good thing I had my friends to keep me company.

    Well until next year.

Wow, Big Ben in a motorcycle accident. I sure hope he is going to be okay. I mean I like the guy and all but not wearing a helmet when riding is just stupid. I am not saying that he would have escaped injury with a helmet but at least his face would not have been smashed.

I guess this puts a damper on the Steelers next season. I sure hope that Batch is ready to go.

    Re: BS's football ramblings.

Well its not the law in Pennsylvania to have to use a helmet when riding a bike, so hopefully the fat cats in the government there learn from this and make it the law again.

Before the accident they talked to him about just this problem, and he responded he liked to ride on a bike without a helmet because it feels more free.  Well now his jaw is free from his skull, I wonder how that feels.

The Steelers should go to Omar Jacobs before Batch but we'll see.  Some people think he'll just miss camp but others say he could be out as long as until November.  The fact is, he'll miss the time it takes to build him back up for the season and he will undoubtedly lose weight from the surgery, hospital food and the fact he has to have his chicken from a straw now...

    Re: BS's football ramblings.

I think the whole motorcycle thing is blow way out of proportion. Yes, on one hand you are more exposed on a bike, but on the other hand, is this the epidemic sportswriters are making it out to be? I recall quite a few athletes the past few years who have been involved in car accidents, including some who have been seriously hurt and lost a lot of playing time. Of course, these cases generally get relegated to small side bars compared to a motorcycle accident which takes over ESPN for at least a week after it happens. The media never covers car accidents in the same manner or with the same exposure as they do motorcycle accidents.

As far as helmets go, I really have a hard time seeing how much benifit you can gain from being thrown from a bike at 60mph simply because you have a helmet on beyond maybe the issue of lacerations is concerned. If you hit with enough impact and in the right spot, bones will break regardless of wearing a helmet or not.

All that said, his knees were what worried me more as far as his playing career is concerned. His head injuries shouldn't have any long term affects, but when I first heard rumoprs about his knees being injured, I wondered if his career was basically over. Lucky for him those don't appear to be serious at this point.

    Re: BS's football ramblings.

Hmmm I heard nothing about Kellen Winslows motorbike accident until I looked up his name on CBS previews for fantasy football and it listed him as out for the season due to motorcycle accident.  It apparently happened quite a bit of time before I saw that

I suspect theres been a lot of coverage of this because of the magnitude of player he is.  If he was in a car accident and sustained similar critical injuries, I suspect we'd be hearing a lot about it too, just not as big an angle as it wasnt really stupid what he was doing.

I understand helmets dont make you invincible on bikes but it certainly cushions the blow a bit and doesnt make you so bloody exposed.

    Re: BS's football ramblings.

Well I have read that the helmets only protect you from injury in a range of 10 to 15 mph. Still having ridden motorbikes most of my life and worn a helmet from the start I can tell you I would rather have a helmet on at for an accident at any speed than not have one on.

I do agree that the media is making a bigger deal of this because it was a motorcycle accident and they are perpetuating the myth that motorbikes mean instant accident and injury. One can ride a bike and be safe. I do not know the details of the Big Ben accident but from what I have read it was the driver who cut him off.

    Re: BS's football ramblings.

I'm surprised Ty. While Winslow wasn't talked about on quite the same level as Ben, he was all over ESPN's lineup from sportscenter to Pardon the Interuption, Around the Horn, and about every other show I can think of. Not to mention Jason Williams in the NBA. Hell, they made a story out of Ben riding motorcycles after the Winslow incident during the whole debate on whether players should be prohibited by contract to ride motorcycles.

As far as being less exposed, a helmet works very marginally. A helmet won't save you from a broken neck, arms, legs, ribs, ankles, concussions, fractured skulls, or much of anything else after about 10-15mph as blade said.

of course, I also don;t like seatbelts, so I'm probably not the best person to talk to on safety matters. Smile [:)]

    Re: BS's football ramblings.

    Also here is my

    Week 1 – 2006-07 picks

Wrong - MIA over PIT – Batch is no Big Ben.

Wrong - TB over BAL – Going to take McNair a bit to adjust.

Wrong - CLE over NO – Watch out for Harrison.

Wrong - CAR over ATL – Panthers will be strong this year.

Right - SEA over DET – Sure Kitna would like to beat his old team, but it won’t happen.

Right - PHI over HOU – Eagles will win their share of games and this in one of them.

Right - NYJ over TEN – Toss up but I think the JETS have an edge, or I might be wrong.

Right - CIN over KC – Bengals will start out strong.

Wrong - DEN over STL – Rams are a team in transition.

Right - NE over BUF – Pats to continue winning ways.

Wrong - DAL over JAG – Unfortunately the boys will be good this year.

Right - CHI over GB – It’s a long year Farve and it starts now.

Right - ARI over SF – 49er’s still full of holes and little talent.

Right - IND over NYG – Older Manning prevails.

Right - MIN over WAS – I know preseason means nothing but then that is what the Skins scored.

Wrong - OAK over SD – Raiders will make just enough good plays to out weight the terrible ones.

Final total 9-7 for 56% in week #1

    Re: BS's football ramblings.

Ah yes better do this in the next 4 hours!

MIA over PIT -- I agree.  This wont be all about QBs but MIA has greatly improved its D-Fence
BAL over TB -- I never liked Simms.  I think BAL has an improved offense and now can throw deep which increases the effectiveness of Lewis
CLE over NO -- And the winner of the worst game of the week goes to.....
SEA over DET -- In a rout.  This is no contest
PHI over HOU -- PHI isnt too bad really.  They werent nothing before TO
NYJ over TEN -- NYJ should be an improved team while TEN should be improving...to the #1 pick in the draft
CIN over KC -- I think Palmer is healthy which should give him a win here vs a shotty defense
DEN over STL -- DEN is a pretty good team I think.  STL isnt bad but not ready to win
NE over BUF -- NE not great but BUF much worse
DAL over JAX -- I think DAL is the best NFC team this year, unfortunetly
CHI over GB -- Can we say "Interception"?
ARZ over SF -- Beware, SF has ARZ's number
IND over NYG -- IND wont win the superbowl this year but they still will be impressive.  NYG will be 3rd in their division
WSH over MIN -- MIN has a very boring offense that doesnt work very well.  WSH has got the talent all around
SD over OAK -- Its all about the runners when the QBs both look unimpressive.

Yes, the kids control the TV. But in my case I have brainwashed them into thinking that they are interested in the football game. I ask them which team will win then get them into cheering and keep track of the score. Probably won't work for an entire game but then it has probably been about 6 years since I got to watch an entire game.
