Well, it was 2 years ago when I wanted to learn it.
I can tell you the language itself isn't that hard to understand.

It's more the Kanji that's the biggest bitch, it's over 2000 characters, and the average Japanese know about 1200/1600 characters.

All you need to do is make the time, speak polite and honorable to others. Unless they deserve otherwise. AND NEVER talk about yourself in an honorable tone. That's the worst thing you could do, if I understood it right. And saying you *Anata* all the time is kinda rude.

As I understand it, you'll learn a language fairly good when you deal whit it dayly.

I tought myself English since I was 5. Family in California and somewhere in England. And watching cartoons alot, and playing games since that age. Didn't have much choise if I wanted to understand things.

Edit: And to add a little tip. If you can play a game in the language you like to learn. Do it, maybe not the first time you go through, but the second time.

Now-a-days, compliments and insults are all you really use lol. Forget a regular full-length convo, it's just "Hello" or "Fucl< you!"

Playing a game in a foreign lanuage does kind of help. A little while back I was playing my brother's imported copy of RahXephon for the PS2. Now I would've never learned how to speak/understand Japanese that way, but I was beginning to memorize some of the characters including "ka" "ko" "yo" and a few others...

The language I'll most likely end up learning next is Latin, since I'm currently taking Latin classes and translating in that class is highly entertaining.

AGRICOLA NOMINE LABORIO: Quid in aqua est, puella?
ANNA: Rana parva in aqua est.
CLAUDIA: Rana amas, Anna?
Anna: Sic! Ranas amo. In silva multa aqua est. In aqua multae ranae sunt. Ranas amatis?

Latin! I've been giggling a bit trying to figure out what word is what.
At least I know I can understand it. It IS fun. Somehow it makes me think of Japanese.

Probably because it isn't as overloaded whit small words like German, English, Dutch and other languages. Maybe I should learn latin first, then Japanese. Most of the languages above are made from latin and eachother. Just think about it, there can't be a day that goes by whitout reading. And surely there is some latin every day.

Well, I can go ahead and do a basic translation so you can know for a fact what word is what. (Actually it still won't be a direct translation because I won't be including the meanings of the word endings...meh.)

Latin is fairly easy to learn...word-wise...but it's the endings that are hard to get down. I thought Spanish was bad...Latin is far worse. But it really isn't THAT difficult.

I just started my second year of Japanese. The only problem is, I've forgotten most of the stuff from the first year.
