    RE: What makes evil evil?

What about the death sentance? There are some people (who generally have very rigidly defined concepts of good and evil) that say the punishment for some crimes should be death. However, take away the fact the other person has committed a crime, and what you are left with is someone who is, essentially, being murdered by the state. Neither side is completely 'right', but they aren't 'wrong' either. At least, not in their own POVs.

    RE: What makes evil evil?

To understand th concept of deathpenalty on must also understand the two general beliefs of humankinds. One group claims that certain people are born to become crimminals that it is in their very genes to kill/rape/steal/etc. and others claim that it is society that has create these crimminals. From what I've heard USA tends to be more of the idea that humans who commits a crime has it in their genes and is therfore be sentenced since they have commited a crime and they receive a punishment for this crime, however in Sweden we have the opinion that soicety created these crimminals and therefore we see prison as something inbetween punishment/rehabilitation. We believe that our citizens should be given a second chance and an oppurtunity to integrate with society. Whether this is the right thing to do or if it is more convenient to lock the crimminals up I do not know.

One can define evil as someone oe something spawned from the fires of hell some may have other opinions. The fact remains however that by separating these into two separate groups we become more and more biased. There is nothing that is entirely black and white, the world isn't that simple.

Actually, I don't believe either of those views..

What I believe is that everyone has the ability to change, but few will..

(btw, I'm for the death penaty)

I've never said I supported either of these views myself I only said that this is the main view of todays society, at least over here.

I can agree that sometimes death penalty is justified, a "quid pro quo" system, something for something. However there is not allways enough cause for the death of the crimminal. Who has the right to take life? Even if it is a "quid pro quo" case are we more civilized if we kill a man under controlled forms?

Okay, I'd like to ask a question of all the people who said good and evil we're just points of view.. Was it right to get rid of Hitler?

because, from the view you're taking, Hitler wasn't really evil, genocide of the Jews was just what he felt was right... so do you think its right to force your views on others, (stopping him) sence you think good and evil are only relevent?

Hitler got rid of himself.  And it was a good thing.  He was power hungry.  If he was really trying to do the 'right' thing, he would have willingly stated publically that it was his fault that he lost the war and taken whatever punishment was coming to him, or he would have let an aryan man take over the reign and throw himself in a camp.

You didn't answer my question. do you think that it was right to attack Hitler?

Hitler needed to be removed one way or another, whether it was killing him or sticking him in a jail to rot

    RE: What makes evil evil?

Yes I think it was right to attack him.  Just as it is right to reprimand a child for doing something that is wrong, even though they think there is nothing wrong with it.  He was murdering and torturing innocent people and it doesn't matter that if he thought he was doing the right thing or not.  He needed to be stopped and i'm pretty sure a slap on the wrist wouldn't have done it.

    RE: What makes evil evil?

    I agree, of course.

but some of you were saying there is no such thing as 'good' and 'evil'... so on what basis do you justify taking him out?

    RE: What makes evil evil?

    Maths

Removing him and the power structure around him to preserve human life.  Left to his own devices hitler probably would have slaughtered millions more than he already had before he was stopped.  Despite the cost to troops and, more significantly, civilians it was the probably the right thing to do from a purely mathematical point of view

but, that anayisys is based upon the assumption that saving people from being slaughtered by him is 'good' and his actions are 'evil'

    RE: What makes evil evil?

He was murdering and torturing people.  Good and evil exist on a spectrum that may be easy to identify when on total opposites sides and difficult to differentiate when existing in that grey area, but murder and torture, as well as declaring war on everyone around you isn't something that should be done.  Why?  Because almost everyone doesn't want to be murdered or tortured.  However, he lived his life imposing those rules on others against their will, costing them their lives or the lives of their loved ones.  He should then expect the same in return.  I don't like to think in terms of good and evil except for in worlds created in fantasy, but I do think that everyone should be prepared to recieve what they dish out.
