Re: This thread is for JWM

Okay today is the annual company golf outing. I don't play golf and probably can count the number of times I have picked up a set of clubs on an actual course in my life on one hand. However I do not let this little fact stop me from participating. There are others in the company that do play on a more reguar basis and I am happy to know that they are not much better than I am. Either I have beginners luck or golf is just difficult unless you spend many hours practicing. Well I hope that it is not to windy or extremely hot out there today and I hope the little cart that sells beer comes around every couple of holes. Big Smile [:D]

    Oh gosh...golf...

Man, theres a so called sport Im never going to try again.  It is really difficult especially if youre used to baseball, which I am, since I practiced being a switch hitter (in a failed attempt) for a few years (though Im a good right handed batter).  But the point is, I start holding golf clubs like they are baseball bats, which is 100% wrong wrong WRONG.  I had the most laughable swing out there, missing the ball by a few hundred yards I felt.  I also nearly took off the head of my friend, who would confiscate the clubs for nearly killing him with them.  I understanded perfectly, and I played the 'enthusiastic golf spectator' for the rest of the day

Good luck, and hope you have fun

Golf is a rather dull game (unless Europe are beating the USA in the Ryder Cup then strangely it suddenly becomes a whole lot more interesting), my brother took it up for a while, never really seemed all that exciting.

Golf is dull as dirt. I'm surprisingly good at mini-golf though.
I swear, now you're just doing it to piss me off.

I don't see the sport in golf... I mean, it's just to smack a ball with full force, then spend the rest of the day finding it, then smacking it again, and start looking... all you know is an approximate landing-site, which you saw from far away... and you might have missed a couple of bounces or a bit of rolling

now the court I play on, it got a friggin' windmill!
Now that is a challenge Stick out tongue [:P]

Re: This thread is for JWM

Well I had a great time playing golf. I got placed in the group with my boss and was able to impress him with the skill that I have. Which considering I never play golf was pretty good. I would have to agree with you guys and girls that golf is not terribly exciting how ever once you get the hang of it then it does become more interesting. My only problem it that it is expensive and takes a really long time to play. About 5 hours to complete 18 holes.

The course we played on was beautiful though. It was in the hills of the north bay in Novato. Last year we played on a very flat course in Alameda that was really boring compaired to this year. Many of the holes this year you could not see the pin and just had to hit it over the next hill and hope you were going in the right direction. Plus the 16th hole you started out on top of a small mountain and got to hit it out there a very long ways. The hole was down hill almost all of the way so the ball really traveled. I made some pretty great shots and also made some really terrible shots. Not much consistancy in my game at this stage. Of course since the next time I will play is probably next year it should stay about the same. Big Smile [:D]

The dispute on whether golf is a sport or just hobby/pastime is a pretty solid debate with both sides having good arguments.

Golf is more about precision than truly about strength.  If youre good at it, you will only need strength to drive one or 2 times per hole.  Most of the time its short drives to the greens and putting to the hole, and this is all about accuracy and precision.  The same can be said about darts too, but is that considered a sport?  Well no.  Neither of these games are physically demanding at all.

That said, golf is boring as hell to watch.

Glad you had a good time, Jwm Cool [H]

Right golf is only a sport if you make it so. For the vast majority it is only a past time.

I don't know about that. I had a pretty good time watching my co-workers and Boss struggle through the course. Plus some of the shots people made were very inventive and entertaining. One guy was doing donuts in the golf cart and a co-worker fell out. One climbed a tree to get a better look at the course.

I think thats because youre watching a train wreck, and thats fun sometimes Wink [;)]

Not to mention you were involved in the game

And not to mention the horseplay that encompassed the event too that added on entertainment.

What Im saying is that its boring to watch on TV.  I dont know how people do it.  Ive tried it!  Its not possible for me

Yes being in the game did make it much more fun.

I agree that watching golf on TV or even in person would not be that enjoyable. As kids we used to put golf on the TV just to make my dad fall asleep. You have to admit it is great badkground noise for sleeping. Big Smile [:D]

How did the sleeping/golf thing work? Didn't he just change the channel? Or was he going to watch the TV regardless, bigod!

Re: This thread is for JWM

Well since we only had one channel to watch when I was younger and since my dad fell asleep just about anytime he sat down it was not really much of a challenge. Kind of like shooting fish in a barrel.
