RE: Auto Racing (revived)
Thank God, or NASCAR could be almost as boring as F1...no, I don't think it could ever get that boring.

RE: Auto Racing (revived)
Ooo! Youre doing some F-1 bashing Well the NASCAR officials are really trying to make it equal fields, so a situation where one team would excell over another, manufacturer wise, should never happen Of course the points change they made should never have happened, but it did, and NASCAR and new owner Brian France are all losing their bloody minds, but its all good.

RE: Auto Racing (revived)
I'm a fan of F1 for many years, so I know it's many faults. Bill France (can you really trust someone named after that country?) maybe losing his mind but at least NASCAR doesn't have Darth Vadar and the Emperor at it's helm. What would happen if Bill France took over F1 for a year and Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone took over NASCAR?

RE: Auto Racing (revived)
Well Brian France would most likely try to make the entire field as equal as possible in the F-1 series. He then might look for all track available that get the biggest amount of audience, despite amount of excitement or uniqueness the track generates. Hed then scrap the entire points system and make it like what NASCAR is doing this year, try and make it look like a playoff system where the last 5 races of the season would determine the champion, probably having positions 1-5 duke it out for the championship. In other words it would be a glorified MESS I dunno what Bernie Eccelstone would do. Probably make the points system better, more pleasing, and more fair. As far as what hed do with the schedule, Im not sure. Hopefully take NASCAR to Laguna Seca.

RE: Auto Racing (revived)
And at the end of it all Schuey would still win the title! I think Bernie and Max would take a look at NASCAR and think good series, good TV deal, good fanbase, good history...sod the fans, sod the history. They'd kill off all the poorer hanger-on teams by presenting them with higher entries fees. They'd only look after the Nextel Cup and let the Busch and Truck series fend for themselves. They'd look to expand into Canada, Mexico and South America at first including a fair few more road courses. Eventually they would look beyond the Americas and expand into the untapped grounds of Asia, where using Japan as foot hold they'd start increasing NASCAR awareness. Eventually it would be their plan to take NASCAR away from it's traditional home and go to countries which probably don't know a thing about motor racing. They'd also readjust the points system so it was less crazy.

RE: Auto Racing (revived)
Well some good, some bad there. The teams that are just barely hanging on may get shot down eventually anyway, but some are beginning to turn things around--Ken Schrader in Beth Anne Morganthal's team FINALLY got sponsorship after a solid year last year with only part sponsorship. But at the same aspect, Tony Raines and Bill Baumgartner's 74 team looks to be heading to the shed. STILL no sponsorship after racing for a year and a half, having a top 10 to the mark, and 2 top 15's, but most importantly, only missing one race. But still no sponsorship, and rumor has it, if they dont get sponsors in the next week, theyll take all their equipment back to Charlotte and not attempt to make the Daytona 500. Id like the series to go international--go to Mexico and Canada, and that really could happen. NASCAR just recently created a building series in Mexico, which could help out in getting a Mexico date somewhere down the line. Taking it outside the US for too long would cause more harm than good. The real market for NASCAR is in North America, its just the way it is--like F-1 it is in Europe. You take NASCAR too far away from North America for too long, it will be doing nothing but losing money.

RE: Auto Racing (revived)
To go international it would help to have some drivers from every country you visit. Before Fernando Alonso got into Renault, the Spanish Grand Prix always had a hard time filling the grandstands. However with his sudden rise to fame at the Malaysian GP last season the Spanish GP was a sell out and I have no doubt that it's single handedly down to Alonso (no matter how bad his facial hair gets ).

RE: Auto Racing (revived)
Yeah, thats true. Maybe one reason why the WRC hasnt really caught on over here, there is no American event and no American representative. Same as the F-1 series, except they do have an event, which could help send some American driver over there...hopefully. But one major thing is that NASCAR is predominantly a oval based series, and most American fans fully support that (Though Id prefer if it was 70% oval, 30% road course), and everywhere else it is the road courses that dominate, ovals are deemed "boring" and "less skillful". At least thats what the steriotype is.

RE: Auto Racing (revived)
"Yeah, thats true."--Tybaltus You mean Alonso's facial hair or need for drivers of other nationalities? In F1 I think Townsend Bell is the test driver for Jaguar or something. If he impresses the team and their regular driver of Christian Klien doesn't then Bell may get into F1. That is a problem for a predominantly oval series, it's hard for NASCAR to move anywhere which doesn't have ovals. They could always run on road courses like Watkins Glen and I think it would quite interesting to see them running around Montreal.

RE: Auto Racing (revived)
Well Alonso's soul patch is kinda cool Townsend Bell tried his hand in CART a couple years ago, but was deemed to aggressive for the series (after causing wrecks at Vancouver and Long Beach). I dunno...I thought that was a rough call, the wreck at Vancouver was very contravercial, because it was a combination of early breaking and late breaking, causing the contact. Hes got talent, I just dont know if he could cut it at F-1 though. Yeah, there are a lot of NASCAR drivers that hate road courses, of course, conversely, there are a lot of NASCAR drivers that love road courses. If it were to go to a 60%-40% schedule or even 70%-30% schedule like I said, it would completely change the face of NASCAR and its stars. Funny, Jeremy Mayfield usually does horribly at road courses, how ironic it was that it was Sanoma/Sears Point that turned his season around last year. After finishing 10th in that race, he went on to score many more top 5's and top 10's as the season progressed.

RE: Auto Racing (revived)
I hope Townsend Bell does make it into the series, I'd rather see him than Christian Klien there. Someone who would be interesting to have in F1 is Jeff Gordon. He tested a Williams a couple of seasons ago at Indiannapolis and got to almost 1second of Montoya's fastest lap, very impressive for a guy who's never driven that kind of machinery before. I think Montoya also had a go in Gordon's NASCAR and also set a very good time. EDIT: Okay some news: Jordan's new car has hit the track today with Nick Heidfeld giving it's first run. The car is once again powered by a Ford engine and has Bridgestone tyres. The car similar to last seasons model with a changes to the front and rear of the car.

RE: Auto Racing (revived)
I dont know Christian Klien terribly well..actually not at all. I just recognize the name. Yes, Jeff Gordon is really only 1 of 5 drivers in NASCAR that really excells at all kinds of racing. The others are: Tony Stewart, Casey Mears (who represented the USA in the All star race that had the world drivers go at a dirt road track), Christian Fittipaldi, and Scott Pruett (who isnt active in NASCAR at the moment, but has run a full season and occasionally runs a few selected races). I figure all those names must sound familiar to you. But I dont see Gordon ever giving up his place in NASCAR. He could really help the F-1 by bringing an American audience into it, but hes got WAY too much working for him in NASCAR to give up. Likewise for Stewart. Looks like a pretty solid car, however I doubt it will pass mediocrity this season

RE: Auto Racing (revived)
Yep, all those names are familiar to me and you're right. F1 could easily offer Gordon enough money but it's probably not to do with money. No the Jordan will not score more than a handful of points all season unless everyone else's cars are bad and Jordan's car is a revelation.

RE: Auto Racing (revived)
Yeah, Gordon is already filthy rich as it is I dont think it will be a revelation Also, 2004 Nextel Cup rookie candidate and rising star, Scott Wimmer was caught by police drinking and driving, having twice over the legal limit of alcohol-blood level. Not sure whether he will stay behind the wheel of the 22 Dodge this season. In 1991, rookie Rob Moroso was caught doing the same thing, unfortunetly, the penalty was far worse than whatever will happen to Wimmer. While driving drunk, Moroso hit a tree going 85 miles per hour. Moroso was pronounced dead at the hospital.
