Doctor Who returns - for real this time?

It's back at the BBC. They are making a full season, rather then just one episode like Fox did. But there is one big difference: At £1 million per 45 min episode, (aprox $1.5 million US) it is the most expensive program the BBC has ever done!

Between that and all the time since any real WHO has been made, I can't imagine what this will be like.

    Well aren't we optimistic?

In the 70's and 80's there were times when Doctor Who was the only hard Sci Fi on TV. Today there is a lot more, but so much of it seems cut from the same mold. Everyone is playing by Star Trek rules with only cosmetic changes, and there is a very strong USA centric viewpoint in most series. (I only noticed this after being exposed to anime for a while.)

Ranma 1/2 does a better job of exploring new civilizations then Star Trek ever did. Like some anime today, Doctor Who took me to places I'd truly never been before.

Yes, but it won't be the same without the cheesey costumes.

I wonder if they will keep the movie made here in the USA as part of the Dr. Who continuity?

You're not as real as you think you are.

The nice thing about this subforum is there's no way that responding to a two-day-old thread could be considered necromancy...

First, I have to be about the only person whose favourite Doctor is the eighth.  Come to think of it, as companions go my preference list is Grace, Romana and Ace top three in almost-equal order... and I'm thankful that K-9 stopped showing up...

Ame, yes, the Eighth Doctor is still a part of official continuity; I remember reading that this new actor would play the Ninth Doctor when I read the info a month ago on the Beeb page where I confirmed the news after reading it over at The Wotch forums.  Large numbers of British fans are hoping that McGann will actually appear in the season opener so he can do the handoff, similar to the way McCoy did things 10 (has it really been that long?!?) years ago...

Then again, we all have to bear in mind that the 1994 movie was always intended to be just a season opener, or American pilot depending upon how you look at things, as well... anyone think there's any hope that we Yanks'll be able to see this one without being subscribed to BBC America?

What I've read seems to say that Christopher Eccleston won't be appearing right away, and Paul McGann's Doctor may have several stories coming.

Can't seem to get the IMG tag to work. Does anyone know where I can look up the BBCodes?

RE: Doctor Who returns - for real this time?

When Tom Baker left the role in 1980, the producer made a comment about a woman possibly playing the lead. It was certainly just a publicity stunt, but the idea has been bouncing around ever since. (And featured in Rowan Atkinson's big DW parody recently.) I think it would be so awesome if it turned out that Billie Piper was really the Doctor, and Christopher Eccleston was her companion. If they shot it right and kept it a secret, no one would know until half way through the first episode when SHE pulls out the key to the Tardis and England suddenly flips face first into the atlantic!

    From a fan site:

The lead actor will be Paul McGann until the change to 'another actor'. McGann has in today's THE TIMES has indicated that he would like to see a woman play the role ( "I would like to see someone scary, highly intelligent and gorgeous." ). This is not being considered by BBC1.
