    Anime Recommendations

Lets see....I've seen a number lately

Ranma 1/2 - Good but don't stick around too long. Not highly reccommended except for people who really really want to stick around for transformations. So-so dub.

Slayers - A good funny show but nothing too spectacular. Grating dub.

Cowboy Bebop - great series, recommended. Please do listen to the dub version (if only to spite a certain someone I'm at odds with)

Ghost in the Shell - ok but nothing to write home about. Ok overall, ok dub, only popular for the worldwide release I think.

Lain - awesome series, very fun to watch, great dub, recommended if you like characters over plot. I do. Wonderful music and visuals.

Perfect Blue - Great thriller, kinda disturbing so keep that in mind, the anime one. Reccomended. Very good dub.

Evangelion (and films) - Very good series, not as violent as some people claim. Keep to the series itself despite the fact it seems to run out of steam. Sometimes still frames are used to death. Good is kinda creepy ending if you keep the series. Watch only the End of Evangelion film. But only if you really really have to. You will not feel very good afterwards. Alright dub in parts.

FLCL - Zany series from the same creators are previous, neat little references for Evangelion watchers, highly recommended although over-priced and under-long. Character designs are great and the action always fun and original. The perfect dub.

Cat Soup - No dub, no plot, no sense, no problem. The answer to 60's cartoon LSD trips from anime, you may not like it but it's something really different (S&M mouse suit and living flaming birds....water elephants...enough said)

RahXephon - Evangelion-lite, but done right. Superb dub, great music through. Excellent characters, a lot of questions left but none of the big ones. Well made, wonderful series. Highly Recommended.

Excel Saga - Absolutely nuts, but a pretty good Simpsons-like satire of all aspects of anime and pop culture as a whole. Sometimes it really funny, other times it really depends on your mood. This will be the archetype for all zany anime series to come (beware the jello arms!!!). Perfect dub to acknowledge what a hard job this project was to dub, recommended but borrow not buy.

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (thus far) - Good series, hilarious early on but it seems to run into too much common sense and plot realism to considered a zany series (far too many 'not all that hilarious' segments). Great dub, good prospects.

Last Exile - (preview) - Beautiful looking show, great voice actors, original concept, very very sweet extras.

Big O - Wonderful show, great dub, great action and characters, nice plot twists. Highly recommended.

Haibane Renmei - Probably the best thing I've seen in anime, bar nothing, I'm concerned about the art style change I've heard at some point but superb series, wonderful character, the most beautiful dubbing around. Not too much on plot but the music and mood is so wonderful you just get lost in the world of the series. Highest Reccomendation I can offer.

    RE: Anime Recommendations

Now THAT is what I call a list.  I can't speak for most of them, but there are some:

Cowboy Bebop: wonderful series, I highly recomend it.

Ghost in the Shell:  I haven't seen the whole thing, but what I saw, I liked.

Lain:  Kinda crazy, kinda kooky, but all good.

FLCL: A current favorite, its probably the least comprehensable anime I've seen... but in a good way.  Very, very good; but try to catch it on TV... the DVDs are crazy expensive.

Last Exile:  The greatest anime I've ever seen.  I was absoloutly blown away by it.  The series isn't finished yet though, but its definately something to keep an eye on.

Big O:  Its like Batman meets every-big-robot-anime-you've-seen.  Dark, gothic, filled with cool gadgets, and big robot fight scenes.  Cool, but i wouldn't buy the DVDs.

Gundam Wing/ Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz: The oldies are the goodies, and if anyone hasn't heard of these before, do yourself a favor and watch them.  Very cool characters, very cool concept, very, very good voice acting.  And old favorite.

Witch Hunter Robin:  Haven't seen all of it, but I like what I've seen.  Cool characters, cool concept, good voice acting, good execution overall.

Astroboy: A classic.  This thing is just great.  Heck, it even got referenced in "Calvin and Hobbes".  What more reason do you need to watch it?

Dual!:  I recomend it, but its not the best anime I've ever seen.  Its funny, but has more cliches than you can shake a stick at... still, a funny, if at times odd experience.

.hack//sign: Very cool concept, and has become somewhat of a craze in some sectors.  I recomend it, but don't get sucked in to buying all the games, dvds, dolls, etc.

Lupin the 3rd:  Funny series, but is beginning to show some age.  The characters are likeable, if not believable, and the situations are funny if a bit outrageous.  Either you'll like it or you'll hate it.  Thats my prediction.

Akira:  Another HUGE classic, it projects a unshakeable feeling of place (which is a good thing in this case).  Wonderful anime, highly highly recomended.

Hellsing:  In my opinion, the best vampire anime out there, even better than Vampire Hunter D.  Even if you don't normally like vampire media, you'll enjoy this one I think.

    RE: Anime Recommendations

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: A must see for any fan of complex plots. The politics in it are both realistic and complex as the three sides try and take contol. Also the battles use thousands of ships using tactics baised on real battles while classical music plays in the background is a thing to true beauty. Only for those who want to have to keep up with dozens of different characters and plots at one time. If you can tell by now this is my favorite series be it anime or live action.

Excel Saga: A fun show that is crazy any way you put it. It is manic with no plot and makes fun of every single chlich in anime.

Mobile Suit Gundam: A must see for gundam fans and anyone who like retro anime. Gundam has not aged well with its dated animation and overused plot but like LotR holding the plot against it is rather stupid since it was the creater of that plot.

Serial Experiments Lain: A surealistic mind-bender. Any fans of anime that reqires multiple viewings to get even the most basic things. Not for everyone though.

FLCL: think of it as a combination of Serial Experiments Lain and Excel Saga. It is about as comprehincable, deep, and confusion as that sounds.

Green Green: Preverted and with a rather poorly done plot but it is exteramly funny for anyone with a preverted sence of humor.

Love Hina: Another kind of preverted anime but this one has a better plot and not so much blatent preversion.

Cowboy Bebop: A fun to just watch an episode and not worry about what happen in the other episodes. If you want cool action then watch this, but if you want plot then it is best to go somewhere else.

Last Exile: It is a promising series. The steam punk theme makes for interesting techonology and backdrops but as of now the plot could either be good or crap depending on the ending.

Naruto: From what I have seen Naruto is a nice light hearted anime that doesn't shy way from darker themes when they are needed to further the story. Nice ninja combat to.

Star Ocean EX: NOW this is an action anime. the best at it's finest.

Spiral: mystery anime real interesting then good.

Candidate for Goddess: it's only 5 episodes but it's pretty funny.Mech made in 3D to protect the last planet that can hold life.

Oh my Goddess: (if you can get the Jap one. people say that Kasumi from Ranma 1/2 is the same voice person as Belldandy) Watch the OVA only the Movie isn't that great.

Final Fantasy Unlimited: Only for hard core FF fans if your not don't bother.

Gatekeeper: People who have a six sense with power who are fighting off an invasnion of aliens.

DNA^2: Protection the world from a MEGAPLAYBOY

Nadesico: Mech based. A cook becomes a pilote to protect the world from an not so alien invastion.

Azumanga Daiho: Pure slap stick funny. set in what seems to be an all girl school.

Yes thats a lot of anime. I've seen more but this is what i recommend.

    RE: Anime Recommendations

Can't believe I never noticed this topic before. Anyways, on with the list!

Berserk: Dark, gruesome and full of nudity and blood. But it has a wonderful story and some of the most realistic characters in any anime. A must see.

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi: A very hilarious anime featuring loads of parodies and fan service. It's story is a bit confusing, but it's all good in the end.

FLCL: Do I even need to explain why?

Last Exile: Beautiful animation. Beautiful music. And the story's shaping up quite nicely. Another must see.

RahXephon: Incredible animation, strongly developed characters and a somewhat confusing story. Tired of Evangelion? Try RahXephon.

Full Metal Panic: It's got something for everyone. Comedy, romance, mecha...you name it. It's got it.

Fruits Basket: A very touching but funny anime with lovable characters, with a story focusing on the Chinese Zodiac.

X: The movie sucked, but the anime completely blew me away. Another must see, especially for CLAMP fans.

Earth Girl Arjuna: A unique anime with a powerful message.

Sexy Commando Sugoiyo Masaru-san: By far the funniest anime I have ever seen. It is friggin' crazy as hell. Try to find the fansubs. You'll be glad you did.

Hellsing: Action packed stylish Vampire ass-whoopin's.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Yet another of those "Do I really have to explain" anime.

Inuyasha: Great action/comedy that tends to drag on a little too long...

Mahoromatic: If you can survive the excessive fanservice, you got yourself one cute yet bittersweet anime.

    RE: Anime Recommendations

I'm deprived. The only animé I've seen out of all those mentioned here are Perfect Blue and CCS (the English version, not the Jap one). Loved 'em both. I am, however, an avid collector of animé wallpapers and I know most of those mentioned here by sight from that...tantalising indeed. I want animé! T_T

    RE: Anime Recommendations

Battle Angel Alita : good post apocalyptic anime but a MUCH better Manga

Nior: An interesting anime filled with plot twists

beyond that I have to agree with a few that others have recommended such as Ghost in the Shell (Manga is much better) and Hellsing

    RE: Anime Recommendations

    Oi, now let's see:

Najica:{PANTIES} very cool female James Bond type series. Also listen to the commentaries in the extras section.

Excel Saga: Well, my opinons about Excel are well known, to my therapist. She tells me not think about it, they had to cut back on my meds.

Ghost in the Shell: two words: very cool.

Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko: cool, not what I expected when I got it.

well, I have more anime than time to rate them all.

    RE: Anime Recommendations

Full Metal Panic: Yeah, I bought the series. Its got just about everything.

Trigun: It's a bit like Cowboy Bebop as far as feel goes. It's a bit more sci-fi though. Very good series, I'm looking into getting the box set.

    Cowboy Bebop: Watch or die.

InuYasha: It's a good thing to relax and watch, nice bubbly humor.

Mobile Suit: Gundam: Hey, it started a revolution.

Lupin III: It's a landmark anime!

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor: It's an old but good anime, with lovable characters and a deep undertone.

    RE: Anime Recommendations

Yu Yu Hakusho - Everything that the Dragon Ball series SHOULD have been. An excellent plot, wonderful characters, UNIQUE ABILITIES FOR DIFFERENT CHARACTERS (something even DBZ should have been able to pick up), a bit of energy use, but not too much, and HIEI (pronounced hee-yay)! The coolest anime character EVER!

Rurouni Kenshin - If you like swordsmen, you like this. Period.

El Hazard - A bit odd at times, but still amazing. I'm not good with words.

Slayers - So far, the first season is the best.
Come, see Neko Girl Jessica's Place, a haven for RPers everywhere!

    RE: Anime Recommendations

Obviously Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Akira, etc. kick ass, but then we all knew that.

Also, "You're Under Arrest" (a cop comedy) is pretty funny, as is "Tsukikage Ran" (story of a wandering samurai, who really likes her sake).

Hmm, still no censoring. Kick ass!

    RE: Anime Recommendations

I can't believe no one's recommended I My Me!  Strawberry Eggs yet...the story is based around a gym teacher who can only get a job by crossdressing and teaching at a girls' school...

and I'd like to get around to seeing a real version of Detective Conan...FUNimation ruined the dub even more fully than they do most, even down to a retitling (anime should NEVER be retitled!!!) and Americanisation of every last character's name other than Conan's own...

as for others, Inu-Yasha and Ranma are obvious, there's never been a Gundam I liked, Wolf's Rain looks promising in dub form...and I'm sure there's something here I'm still missing

    RE: Anime Recommendations

mm FIST OF THE NORTH STAR!!!

-First anime I ever watched, because I watched the Live Action spinoff movie way back when. Lots of gore. Lots of fighting. Some plot.

X-Neato plot and fun charactors, all the death, gore and bloody destruction you could ever need in a non-zombie film.

Street Fighter-Oldie but a goodie for fans of the arcade series, as THIS IS WHERE THE PLOT GOES!!!

Ninja Scroll- Ok, I dunno if anyone else mentioned it, but I diddn't see it. Very Romeo-And-Juliet, only with Ninjas, demons, and a lecherous old man!

    Yay for lechers!

(Come on, the only reason you're still watching reruns of Ranma is for Happosai..)

Cybersix: odd little anime, very... what's the word I'm looking for? *Shrug* You'd have to see it to get it, it's not that long of a series. GENETIC ENGINEERING, Zombies, and a Crossdressing main charactor.

hmm. There's than new one "Naruto", with the ninja kid, and that one's looking OK, but I haven't seen enough of it to rate it.

    RE: Anime Recommendations

    Also; Armitage 3.

Because sentient robots fighting for freedom and combatting terrorism, with action and politics, this one was just the best anime I've ever seen.

    Period.
