High Adventure aka The Barbarian Game

    Alright I’ll try this again…

I don’t seem to have much luck with getting games started or running for very long… I think this is due to over complication; novel sized introductions, back stories ect… I guess I am just to used to being able to actually talk to the players in person.

So this time I’m going to run it a little simpler.

This time I am running… A Tale of High Adventure!

“Lo there do I see my father, lo there do I see my mother and my sisters and my brothers; lo there do I see the line of my people back to the beginning, lo they do call to me, they bid me take my place among them, in the halls of Valhalla where the brave may live forever!”

This game is set in an epic fantasy world mixed with aspects of Earth’s ancient history and mythology predating the Middle Ages, think the Hyborian age Conan the Barbarian. Magic is a real and frightening thing, understood by few, terrifying to many, and awe inspiring to all. Beasts of myth and legend lurk around every corner waiting for the unwary; deeds of honor and valor are on the people’s lips in the wake of passing bards or the people who inspire their stories. Will your saga be told for generations to come as you feast in Valhalla, can you answer the riddle of steel, when the gods cast judgment on you will you ascend to the hall of heroes or will you be forgotten and banished from paradise?

The following character is based solely off of pagan Celt culture, feel free to mix and match; this is a fantasy game not a history lesson after all; we don’t have to be spot on. Hell, go ahead and make up your own culture if you wish; I just like the real world flare, it’s a good foundation.

    Character Example:

Name: Brann Son of Torrey (Or Brann Torreyson)

Appearance: Standing at five feet, seven inches; he is broad shouldered and strong. fair skin, pale blue eyes, dark hair and thick beard of auburn coloring mark him as a northerner. His body is worn rugged from harsh weather, hard labor, and brutal combat. He is clad in animal skins and furs hinting at a primitive and barbaric heritage. His arms are tattooed with pagan symbols of strength and protection, on his chest is the image of a boar; this animal symbolizes courage and strength in battle to his people. He wears a heavy iron sword with a worn leather sheath at his side; it looks old and well used. He has a worn leather pack to carry his few belongings.

Strengths: Brann is a strong and hearty individual; he is an experienced nomad and can survive in the harshest of northern environments, mercenary work has brought him into contact with many different civilizations and cultures giving him a fair grasp on language. His experience and zeal in combat make him a skilled combatant; a druid declared that he was under a geas and could not be killed in battle, true or not this geas as removed his fear of combat and allows him to fight with a berserker’s fury and disregard for his own safety that is frightening to behold.

Weaknesses: Brann is overly impulsive and rarely thinks his actions through as he constantly lives life on the edge. Other geas where placed upon Brann at birth, he is required to never deny any person the hospitality of his camp nor may he ever refuse to protect a woman, failure to adhere to his geas would bring dishonor and even death. An old battle wound has left him blind in his left eye, although he has compensated to still remain effective in melee combat his depth perception is so thrown off his ability with a ranged weapon is atrocious.

Re: High Adventure aka The Barbarian Game

Name: Evelyn Quim (aka The Red Wolf)

Appearance: Evelyn is about 5'5", and fairly well built.  He has shaggy red hair and a short red beard which gave him the name Red Wolf.  Evelyn always wears a confident smirk, and there always seems to be a secret you'd love to know hiding behind his piercing blue eyes.  He keeps knives of every kind among other useful items of his proffession stashed on his person.  There's a joke in certain circles that if guards stripped Evelyn completely naked and took all of his belongings, he'd still have a lockpick or knife on him.  He usually wears a forest green shirt and pants and wears tall cowskin boots.  He keeps another set of clothes in a pack he wears on him at all times.

Strengths:  Evelyn is a master thief and has dabbled in the art of assassination.  Since the beggining of his auspicious career, he has only been caught three times.  He's also incredibly skilled with his knives.  Evelyn almost never misses with throwing knives, and if caught in battle he carries plenty of long knives and daggers that do their job quite well.  Evelyn's quick hands and sharp intuitive mind make him a formidable threat to both life and property.

Weaknesses:  Put simply, Evelyn has no skill with any kind of weapon other than his knives and daggers.  He's not notably strong either.

[I may add to this later, I have to go to work right now]
