    Re: Baseball Rant thread

Well sounds like they have it all wrong over there.

Though cold weather? Yikes we are fighting heat waves over here, 4 of the last 7 days have been 90 degrees or hottor, and none have had a low of below 75

They need to be more fan friendly, though. While concession stands are always busy and expensive around here, they can always be found around the corner and I dont believe Ive ever seen any closed, even for weekday games, heck concessionaires are always on the move too. (Nothing like the smell of peanut shells and beer to remind me of the ballpark)

But you shouldnt say no to tickets youve already got. Over here youre lucky to get bleacher seats as its always a sell out around here. Be thankful for what you do have and enjoy it! ;)

    Re: Baseball Rant thread

Well the thing about the bay area is that during the summer even if it gets to 100 here it almost always cools down in the evening. You get the fog rolling in through the golden gate and the temperature drops. It was probably 80 dor a little better during the day. By game time the fog had rolled in adn it was cooling down. It was not to bad but after sitting for 5 innings with a cool breeze blowing down my back I had had enough and even the kids with the sweatshirts on were cold. Mostly because they were just sitting in one place.

I know I should not complain to much and I will go to the next game. But I thought that the $1 hotdogs on the weekends and then $3.50 for the same hotdog during the week was a rip off. I think next time I just might bring my own food.

Yeah the bay area kind of takes the A's for granted. They only show up when they want and even then not in great numbers. You can see why the A's spend so much less than the Giants and other teams. The Giants park can seat 40,000 plus and sell out every game even when they suck.

Yeah, so learn from your mistakes--bring food and extra coats and all should be well :)

As for the culture of Oakland vs San Fran--That does surprise me a bit. Im surprised there is such a descrepency regarding attendance at Oakland and San Fran games. The Giants have a richer history over the A's, but most of that was from when they were from New York. The only thing I really see different about the 2 is the stadium. SBC is a real beauty while the Colliseum is a rat cave.

    Re: Baseball Rant thread

Yes the colliseum is a rat cave......a really big rat cave. I do think that the Giants attendance is all about the ball park. I attended a few games before the Giants moved to SBC park and they felt much like the games that I have attended in Oakland.

I would have to say though that I prefer the fewer people at the A's games. Makes for a nicer arrival and exit process. I am sure as the season winds down and the A's are in the division race more people will attend. Then we will the whole fairweather fans vs. hardcore been there from the beginning fans atmosphere.

Hey how about those Bluejays. Going 18 innings and then beating the Angels, that has to feel great. A game like that has to just wipe out both teams physically and emotionally. You can imagine playing an entire game where almost every pitch and at bat may decide the fate of the game.

    Re: Baseball Rant thread

So youve never been to the new Giants ballpark?  It looks like a lot of fun there, though VERY crowded.   And me, being anti-agoraphobic (afraid of crowds), I can certainly relate wanting to go to less crowded games, but it does make me feel good that people come over and support the team

Ah yes, I was quite pleased with the Bluejays win last night putting them in 3rd in the division.  They did the exact opposite of what I thought theyd do by sweeping the Angels.

Of course there was a game last year with the Marlins vs Mets, I think, or maybe it was the Marlins vs someone else, but it went about 25 innings before the Marlins won, this coming the day after a 14 inning game the Marlins also won.

A's are now the favorites for the wildcard

And the Padres are a division leader at 51-51....what an awful division.

    Re: Baseball Rant thread

Somehow I don't think that the A's are going to settle for the wildcard. I do believe that they will win the division. Thanks you Bluejays.

Yeah the NL west is the NL worst this year. One of the worst features is that the Giants are still not out of the division picture and they still get talked about like they can win the thing. They will not win even if the Padres lose al of the rest of their games. The Giants do not have the talent to win the division. Which in this case is pretty bad.

    Re: Baseball Rant thread

The A's are definitely alive for the AL West, yes.  PLENTY of time to catch up and win.  With the Bluejays sweeping the Angels, the Angels went into New York only to see 2 heartbreaking loses that can only further cripple the team.  Not good news if you're a halo fan, meanwhile the A's look to be on cruise control, now dominating the Twins, who will continue to faulter without Torii Hunter and standing pat before the trade deadline.

The Padres have fallen out of the NL West lead now, and its the Diamondbacks on top, the worst team of 2004, who would have thought it?  The Padres have found a way to lose, and apparently they loved it so much theyve become addicted to it.  The Giants ARE still alive in that division, believe it or not, though they are behind the Dodgers, D'Backs and Pads.  I dont see them winning it though.  It should be ARZ vs LA now

So if the playoffs started now, heres how it would look:

    American League:

Oakland A's (Wildcard) at Chicago White Sox (AL Central)

Boston Red Sox (AL East) at Las Angeles Angels of Anaheim (AL West)

    National League:

Arizona Diamondbacks (NL West) at St Louis Cardinals (NL Central)

Houston Astros (Wildcard) at Atlanta Braves (NL East)

    .

    Re: Baseball Rant thread

Yeah the few radio talk shows that I have heard recently focus on how the Giants in right in it and how the Padres have fallen. They don't focus on the leader Diamondbacks. I think it is because no one wants to believe that they are leading the division. Early in the year I remember hearing about how terrible the Dbacks were and how the Giants should beat them in every game. Now the Giants have to chase them. Stick out tongue [:P]

    Re: Baseball Rant thread

Well things certainly have changed since last I posted here....

Heres a preview of the playoffs if they were to start now, though the White Sox are quickly falling and the Tribe is quickly gaining.

    American League:

New York Yankees (Wild Card) at Chicago White Sox (Central)

Oakland Atheletics (West) at Boston Red Sox (East)

    ----------

    National League:

Philadelphia Phillies (Wild Card) at St Louis Cardinals (Central)

San Diego Padres (West) at Atlanta Braves (East)

    Re: Baseball Rant thread

Yeah I liked it better when the Yankees were not in the picture. Now I just hope the A's can hang on and win the West. I also hope the Red Sox keep ahead of the Yanks.

    Re: Baseball Rant thread

Lots of hoping, but its not looking great, though the West is anyone's guess.

I hope the Red Sox can keep ahead of the Yankees (obviously!) and furthermore, Cleveland/Oakland/Anaheim jump the Yankees for the Wild card...

    Re: Baseball Rant thread

Arrrrgh! What the freaking heck are the Mariners doing. If you are not going to be a winning team why are you now beating a team that is in contention for a playoff spot. Not that I expect teams to throw games or anything, but why beat the A's now.

Now that Bonds is close to being back in the line up the radio and fans here in SF are talking World Series. The team has a losing record in the worst division in baseball for crying out loud. Even if you make the playoffs just mail the win to you first round opponent and save everyone the trouble.

    Re: Baseball Rant thread

Teams love to play the spoiler in the regular season when they have been eliminated from contention. I mean just look how tough the Devil Rays are playing.

Speaking of the Rays, I went to see their game against the Sox last Monday (the 29th). Had to wait out a 2 hour rain delay where there was sometimes torrential downpours. But I brought an umbrella and was ....mostly....dry when we finally got to see the game. The Sox won 10-5. It was a fun fun fun game. Im glad I got to spend it with my dad.

As far as Bonds, I dont know what hes thinking. If he plays any games on the road, he'll be booed beyond belief, and look what that did to Palmeiro in Toronto. He wore earplugs, has been batting .077 and is now on indefinite rehab...his career is most likely over and he'll be leaving with his tail between his legs and in a heap of shame.

But the Giants wont make the playoffs. As much as the Dodgers and Padres stink, they have more life to them than a team dependant on a steroid druggy

    New year different Sox.

Congrats Chicago. Now that your curse is lifted we can move on to the next team.

I am thinking that maybe some other teams might want to change their names to something with Sox in it. How about the Seattle Blue Sox?

    Re: Baseball Rant thread

Yeah it seems that all the cursed teams are starting to turn it around, namely ones with team names of Sox.  I was bloody happy for the Chicago White Sox.  About time Chicago enjoyed a non-Jordan title.  But sadly another sweep and anti-climactic World Series.  The National League just cant win against the American league.

Now the 2 teams to go the longest between winning a title are the Cubs and Indians.

However only 2 named curses remain--The Curse of the Billy Goat (Cubs) and the Curse of Billy Penn (Philladelphia) (Now that the Bambino and Black Sox curses have been lifted)

Seattle Blue Sox?  Thats pushing it Stick out tongue [:P]  Besides, I like the Mariners name.
